Ideas for a business name?
Hey, all...

I am going to start a little hobby business to help fund my personal outdoor pursuits.

I've been a fly fisher, kayaker, rafter, climber, hiker, etc for decades and want to be able to bring my passion for these activities to others...for a small price, of course. My outdoor philosophy is "Less-is-more", so I want to gear my business to embrace my minimalistic attitudes.

For example, I make custom fly rods. Primarily, I use blanks and other materials that are quite a bit lighter than your average Sage or G Loomis rig. I don't wear a fly vest loaded with 30 pounds of extraneous tackle, rather carry a small box with a selection of about 10 different flies, a hemostat, a knife, a couple extra leaders, a spool of tippet material, and a pair of fingernail clippers. I fish very skinny waters and love to sneak up on fish rather than throw 30 yards of line at them. In short, my approach to this particular sport is more like a tactician, which led to my first idea for a business name: "The Tactical Angler".

However, that name does not embrace the other sports I want to include in my business, so I need something a little more generic, yet retaining my less-is-more philosophy.

So far, I've considered:

The Tactical Angler
Outdoor Pursuits, Inc
Adventure Pursuits

Any other ideas for names (and possible logos) would be very much appreciated!

1. The second two are boring. The first is good.
I like "Minimalist Sporting", myself. That I would remember. You could put a gun to my head and I wouldn't remember the difference between "Outdoor Pursuits" and "Adventure Pursuits".

3. Yeah...I like the first one, too.
I was thinking about stealing the US Army Ranger tab or Airborne Wings and using that as the basis for the logo.

6. The Tactical Angler is a really catchy name, it's too bad that
you can't just braoden it into The Tactical Adventureer or some such without sounding like a Soldier of Fortune wannabe.

Maybe go with Tactical Angler and have a logo or subtitle which emphasizes all of your other areas of interest/expertise.

By the way, the winter boating season is gangbusters up here--plus doing some pool work has really dialed in my back deck roll, with a little less luck on the hand roll (about 25%, and that in the pool).)

I've been trying to think of a low stress weekend business which might help fund my own goodie purchases and trips, so I'm totally pulling for ya! It sounds like you are lot closer to making it a reality than I am htough. :)

7. Be careful on that back deck roll.
You really have a good chance of throwing your shoulder out in a combat back deck roll. IMHO, it's much better to tuck then roll. But, if you can dial in a good back deck roll, it could come in handy in a pinch.

I need to get back into my boat. Since my son was born 2 years ago, I've spent a total of 0 (zero) days in my 'yak. I'm getting the itch something fierce.

Hey, check this out: USNWC Only 2 hours away from me.

9. The Back Deck is kind of controversial

Ken Whiting adamantly maintains its superiority over conventional rolls, as it is quicker, plus you can minimize shoulder danger by staying "in the box" with your arms.

I've never tried one on moving water, but I figure anything which helps me improve boat control and balance is good. Plus, living in MN I'm pretty much a playboater so the speed might keep me in the hole a bit longer. Although the creeking going into Lake SUperior in the spring is pretty much world class--I plan on hittin g some of that this spring--if we get any snow.

Good luck on getting back into it!

ok so snark aside, I add my vote to Tactical Angler as well because I could come up with none better either.

Maybe get some cross traffic from the ultralight hikers as well as those who are into the same philosophy as you.

12. No, not The Tactical Angler
Half the people who see your business name won't know what "tactical" means; the other half will think you fish with Uzis or something.

How about "The Fly-Weight Sportsman"?
