Can I get some ipod help?
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 04:24 PM by LeftyMom
Every time I try to sync it with my computer, I get an error message that reads

"Attempting to copy to the disk MyFirstName's iPod has failed. An unknown error occured (-69)." Except with my real first name.

Any advice on getting this fixed?

Edit:

It's a 30 Gig Ipod Video (5th Gen) and the computer is a Sony Vaio laptop running XP.

1. What software are you using?
I know nothing about ipods, but I suspect the problem is in your computer software setup. You might, for example have Windows Media Player set up as the "automatic" synching software, but you are trying to use iTunes.

Just a wild-ass guess from me. I used to have a problem with an IRiver mp3 player and had to make an adjustment in WMP to get it resolved.

Good luck... I know it's frustrating.

2. Restore it from scratch and see what happens
Using the iTunes interface.

4. PC or Mac? And more importantly,
is the computer telling you a message by saying "error (69) occurred"?

6. Sony Vaio Laptop, Windows XP.
Dude, if the computer's trying to make a play, I'm going to kick it's ass. :grr:

I reset it and turned automatic syncing off so I could add songs one at a time. From the forums, it looks like it's a bad file that's causing it to hang up. I haven't found the problem yet, but I'm still copying over the As.

5. Here you go:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302684

When you try to sync files to any iPod in iTunes on a Mac or Windows computer, you might see the following -69 error message:

"Attempting to copy to the disk failed. An unknown error occurrred (-69)"

This error occurs when iTunes tries to send files to your iPod, but a file (or files) is unusable (something is wrong with it).

To figure out which file (or files) is causing the error, update to the latest version of iTunes and then do this:

1. Control-click (Mac) or right-click (Windows) on your iPod icon in the iTunes Source pane, then choose Sync Songs from the shortcut menu.
2. Watch the display at the top of the iTunes window while your iPod is being updated. The name of the problematic file should appear in the display right before the error appears.
3. Then remove the bad file from the list of songs to be synced to your iPod:
4. Open iTunes Preferences. Mac users: From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences. Windows users: On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
5. Select the iPod in the iTunes Source pane.
6. Click the Settings tab.
7. Select the "Only sync checked items" checkbox (please note that this checkbox is only available for an iPod configured to update automatically).
8. Select the appropriate item under Library in the sidebar and find the bad file in the list. (For example, if the file in question was a song you would select Music in the iTunes Source pane. If it were a video you would select Movies or TV Shows in the sidebar.)
9. Deselect the checkbox next to the file name.
10. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to update your iPod. If you have multiple problematic files in your iTunes library, you may need to repeat the other steps to remove them too.

To prevent future issues, you should delete the unusable files from your iTunes library, then restore them from a backup or reimport them from a CD.

If you're not able to isolate to any single file or if another iPod works with the same songs, then disconnect any other devices connected to USB or FireWire and try again. If the issue continues, then then try resetting your iPod. If the issue continues, then restore your iPod.
