Computer question.
I bought today a Western Digital External Hard Drive, My Book Essential Edition, 250 GB USB

I haven't opened the box yet, did I get a good one.

The price was so good I hated to pass it up.

I read Western Digital was good.

1. What's the price?
Western Digital, Maxtor, IBM Data Star, they're all pretty good.

It's just a mater of price.

3. For 250GB? That's decent.
Now the question is how you're going to install it. Some drives prefer to rest horizontally. Some PCs force you to place the drives on their side and they overheat sometimes (I have that problem with one of my drives).

4. This one is to be placed horizontally.
The box says it is cool running hard drive, and has a shock-absorbing case.

6. The Western Digital External Hard Drives had good reviews at newegg.com
It was $109 at newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136022
It's given 5 stars there with over 50 reviews.

9. Another stupid question.
Can I use this new external hard drive just like the hard drive in the lab top.

Can I download software on it and use it.

I have software to edit photos and I would like to have it and the photos on the same hard disk drive.

15. I got two 2 gig flash drives for about about $40 back in November from Office Max .
They had some good sales, 2 flash drives for the less the price of one.

I had a 1 gig already so I have plenty of storage space.

The flash drives are easy to back around.

I have so many pictures that I would need a lot of flash drives.

Yahoo has unlimited picture storage.

Offsite is good.

16. Damn, thats a great price....:)
My bud just got one of those mp3 players for his car, which had the flash drive port on the face plate, and he was dying to have a good amount of music on a little flash drive...we only priced a few, and 40 bucks was the low end for the 516's....

I believe, his sister got him a 2 gig for Xmas, but I have no idea how much that one costs...he offered me his 516 and I told him it would just collect dust if I kept it...

17. I have all the flash drives along with several DVDs full of pictures.
I need to edit some of the older ones.

This one should hold about 71,000 pictures.

19. Hate to be the sour note in the choir, BUT
as a computer repair geek with several years experience, I've seen many WD drives die prematurely (read that as suddenly, without warning signs, before the warranty expiration date).

Note that an external hard drive case contains the exact same IDE hard drive that goes inside your computer.

I personally prefer (in this order): Maxtor, Seagate, then Hitachi (formerly IBM).

20. Thanks for the info.
The box still isn't open yet.

What about DVDs, I will keep them in safe boxes.

Do DVDs keep well.

21. DVDs are far more permanent media
The technology has advanced pretty far. An older cd used to be good for twenty years or so in theory, and things have gone far beyond that point. Treat 'em right, keep 'em in their case, and do NOT touch the mirrored surface (or put 'em down without their case so as to avoid scratches and dirt) and they should last many years.
