9. beat this... per back years...
my great grandfather was born in the 1850s. My great-great grandfather was born in 1795. Only learned it (relatively) recently - but five generations on my mother's side of the family the five generation spread (from birth of great great grandfather to the youngest great great grandson) from birth to birth goes from 1795 to 1984. So while this is a nonsequitor from the 'blow' theme of the thread - just thought I would throw this nonsequitor (which I think is pretty unique) into the conversation.

11. It is both unique and interesting and I thank you for the contribution
And I wouldn't be surprised if the folks posting to original "knew" thread found it interesting as well. (It would be a shame if a "legitimate" post had to get locked up with the rest of this depravity!) :)

Before going back to "the old country" this summer (haven't been in thirty years) I revisted the family tree. I sorta knew this - but it never struck me before. Around the same time there was a story in the paper about a family reunion that had five generations present - which was cool - but struck me that the span of my families five generations was also pretty cool. Though they weren't yet in the US I put it into my mind in terms of US history landmarks - my great grandfather was born just a few years after the ratification of the constitution - and before the war of 1812; My great grandfather was born before the civil war. My grandmother (that line of the family) was born before the Spansih American War - and my mother was born just before the market crash led the way to the Great Depression - and I wasn't born until around the time of Kennedy's assasination. Cool, eh?

When I was back in Norway, I went to the family "home" of my great grand father (and presumably of my great great grandfather) - and found their graves - next to a church that was built before (iirc) 1800. It was rather an amazing feeling of connection.

on edit - while I know this is a far more serious post than the thread intends - I do appreciate the chance to type out these thoughts - and share them :D
