Baby Boy Chinchilla Born January 5, 2007 (pictures)
His parents:

Stilgar - the Daddy

Sabine - the Mommy (with Stilgar and the new baby)

And the new baby boy (No name as of yet. We're waiting for his personality to suggest one)

Chinchillas are born able to walk (as well as jump and climb) - with their eyes open and they already have teeth.

We've been baby-proofing the Chinnie House. Baby chinchillas can squeeze through the bars on the house risking maiming and even death.

10. He was born sometime between 1:30 AM and 5:30 AM - I heard
a cry and knew it wasn't the usual chinnie noise...I almost expired from delight when I first saw him.

5. We thought about that. Big "Dune" fans here.
:)

We'll see how his personality takes shape first though. He scoots a lot now and my eegit is calling him Scooter when he holds the baby.

7. No - many have 2 kits and sometimes, though not often, more
The baby has already figured out how to get out of the house so I'm glad Sabine only had one.

8. Immediately. They play mostly and then get the turning around and around
motion going.

It's important their fur stay clean and dry, so taking sand baths are a must from birth.

Which will make him about as big as the palm of my hand.

I'll post more pictures later.

20. Wow. I didn't realize they were so small.
I figured any poor creature they make coats from must be fairly large. At least large enough to get some serious amount of fur from.

Shows what I know.

They're cute little buggers.

31. 10-20 years
They don't seem to mind my dog too much. He sniffs them. They sniff him. My dog likes to lick them. :)

My dog is excited by the arrival of the baby. He sits outside their house and nuzzles his nose against the baby (through the screening) - who doesn't seem to mind.

Are they affectionate with humans?

So sweet! Thanks for sharing.

32. They get lonely - so a companion helps (very much social creatures)
They enjoy playing with each other and mine mope when the other isn't in the same house. If you have a misbehaving chin you can place it in a time out house for a minute or so - they DO get the message...and the others will mope because the misbehaving chin is out of the main house.

Chins play dominance games that can cause problems within the family...so off to time out.

Chins can be trained to sit up and beg...just like doggies.

If you socialize the chin through handling they are very affectionate to humans. However, if you make one angry or scared, they remember and will hold it against you for a very long time.

33. They are a lot of work - but fun.
Chins have to have supervised "outdoor" (outside the chin house) play. Otherwise they will chew on everything - furniture, walls.

I let mine out every evening for about 30 minutes so they can bounce off the walls and run and jump.

They are loving, smart and just plain fun to watch.

His had a baby soon after he adopted her. Now, her baby lives next door, and they get together often to play.

They are the cutest things in the world!!

37. I've been watching the baby for hours today
Just sitting at their house and watching him "learn" new things.

He figured out how to get out almost immediatedly (hence all the baby-proofing)

He was climbing the ladder like a pro shortly after he was born.

I've been giggling and grinning a lot today. :)

43. Not her first one
The first one died at birth. Sabine was too young and pregnant when we got her.

They can have 2-4 a year.

The couple that originally had them both decided they didn't want them anymore. That's how I've gotten all my pets over the years....from people that got an animal only to discover they weren't that committed to taking care of them. We take in those animals and either keep them or take the time to find them good homes.
