If I vacationed in New York City......where should I go?
I like museums, art galleries, old historic places, theatre etc.....more than "shopping'....

any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe going overseas for my vacation, but I'm thinking if that's too costly, maybe just keep it closer, and I've always wanted to take in New York.

4. there's no shortage of museums or history in the city
i can spend a whole day at the metropolitan museum of art and the guggenheim is awesome but i've not yet made it to the museum of modern art (they finished a big remodel about two years ago). and the museum of natural history is always a must for me. as far as history, a walking tour of the village and soho was fun for me. if you get out to queens, the science museum is a lot of fun. and there are tons of smaller museums and galleries across the city.

as far as shows go, hit up the tkts booth in times square for discounted seats (i think they're cash-only, but i can't remember)

what ever you do, have a great vacation

15. My parents saw that when they visited.
They liked it a lot. We also went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was excellent.

5th Ave and 83rd St. ... Fantastic!

Go downtown to SoHo for the galleries.

Also, downtown is "old historic New York" --- The West Village
is particularly old and wonderful (that's why I live there!).

As far as theatre, I hate Times Square --why not give off-B'way plays a try.
Smaller, more intimate theatre, and away from the piles of tourists
that take up every square inch of the sidewalk
looking for the
Olive Garden.

10. Hmmm...avoid England
You might run into Kate Winslet or Gwyneth Paltrow and I know you despise them. Go to California where you have a chance of, say Pamela Anderson or Britney Spears. Happy Vaca!

11. The NY Historical Society Museum, Museum of the City of NY
The Metropolitan Museum, The Cloisters. Take the Staten Island Ferry (is free) if the weather is nice. If "The Vertical Hour" is still playing, see it for Bill Nighy's performance. See the revival of "Company." Walk through Central Park. Lots to do and you won't have enough time.

12. Oh, NYC is WONDERFUL.
How long do you have? MOMA and the Met are both fantastic. As far as theatre, you can get some good deals at the half price TKTS booth, both for Broadway musicals and some plays as well. Those silly one-day (or half day) tours that take you around in a bus are actually quite good, because you get a good overview of the city and then you can go back and see the things that the guide points out that interests you. There is SO much to do there, you won't believe it!

make sure you hop on the Staten Island Ferry for free and get your camera out for the ride back towards the island - it's beautiful.

22. You might want to wait
until the next election but Washington DC is full of what you like.
I have never felt so humbled as when I went there.
The Lincoln memorial, the Vietnam memorial is mind blowing, So is the nurses memorial at the end of the VN memorial, the story for this is that the sculptor did such a phenomenal job that the board asked them to put a blindfold on the soldier because the face was so "true to life" that they were afraid if the mother of the soldier came she would recognize his face.....so the had to alter it.
the Smithsonian (WOW), the National archives and you cannot miss the Iwo Jima memorial at night and look out over DC. And Fords theater, in the middle of a depressed area, WOW. What feelings.......

We have so many wonderful things in DC, you just need to get there......

lost

25. We're going in March
Edited on Sat Dec-30-06 11:07 PM by libnnc
And we're staying at what looks like a great hotel in Greenwich Village. We've been to NYC a few times and have always stayed in midtown Manhattan but I love the Village so I'm really looking forward to it. We've done most of the major attractions(Statue of Liberty, NBC Studios, Times Square, etc) so this trip we're focusing on museums and art galleries and will probably see one Broadway show (and dessert at Sardi's after).

I like the Whitney Museum (it's easy to spend way too much time in there) and the Guggenheim is really nice. Ellis Island was fascinating. My SO wants to see the Tenement Museum and I want to hang out in the big main branch of the beautiful NYC Public Library. Aside from that, I'd say just walk around. NY is a wonderful place to just get out and walk. The blocks are very short and the streets run on a grid system so it's really easy to find your way around. Also, use the subway. It's a great way to get around, but as always, be aware of your surroundings. The best times we've had in NY are usually unplanned. Have fun!
