Why does coke (cola) taste different in the glass than it does out of the bottle?

Ever noticed that?

I always end up pouring it in a cup/glass because I like the taste better than straight outta the bottle (small 20oz of course).

BEFORE I get a bunch of anti-soda posts; I have about 1 20oz. every 2 months or so. I'm not big on it like I used to be; but sometimes I gets a craving.

Just wondering why the difference. Same thing with it every time.

Glass is rather a better construction than plastic.

Plastic is made from oil too. :puke:

Oh, when it comes to V8, pump some iron and but the glass bottles. Stored in plastic, it's gross and divide the expiration date in 2 if you want to know how long the stuff really tastes semi-good in when stored in plastic...

3. Ya know,

from what I remember; it DOES taste different (the cola) when I had it in a glass bottle. I'll have to make sure I pick it up in the store that carries it in those pint glass bottles from now on.

5. I drink so much pop at work that I can't stand it out of a can or

bottle any more. I have to pour it into a glass. And I abhor straws. So much that I tell waitstaff to not bring me one. The only time I will use a straw is if I go thru a drive-thru and get a pop to drink in the van.

6. Much of your taste comes through your nose - the small opening of a bottle

doesn't allow much "nosing".

This is why wine glasses are big and round and have large openings (except champagne flutes, which are designed in a way that limits the nose (sadly) but also keeps the bubbles inside the champagne (yay!)).

A bottle also forces the liquid further back on the tongue, whereas the glass brings the liquid splash more toward the front of the tongue so that a) more of your tongue is tasting the liquid, and b) the front part, which tastes salty and sweet tastes, gets a better splash.

Ok. Makes perfect sense now. I knew that about the wine glasses; don't know why I didn't apply it universally.

8. I agree. I don't like Coke in a bottle as much. Unless it's a glass bottle.

I have a friend that works for Coke and she tells me that the temperature of the Coke is critical to it's taste. I can't imagine the plastic bottles stay as chilled as an aluminum can. I asked her why movie Coke and McDonald's Coke always taste better than anywhere else (it's a true fact - movie Coke is the best) and she said that McD's is unique in that they chill their boxes of syrup. Most places do not. So, when the syrup hits the carbonation and they are both cold, it simply tastes better. Maybe this is also true of the plastic bottles?

9. AHA!

I knew there was something about Mcd's coke that was different! I tend to crave that taste that they have every once in awhile; because it is totally different from other Cokes. Cool to know why! Been wondering that for years. Thanks!
