Research Suggests HOUSEWORK Can Cut Breast Cancer Risk In Women
Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 02:04 PM by matcom
<snip>

MODERATE housework can help women substantially to cut their risk of developing breast cancer, according to a study.

Researchers analysed data from 218,169 women, aged 20 to 80, in nine European countries, looking at a range of activities, including work, leisure and housework.

Pre-menopausal women who did housework were 30 per cent less likely to develop breast cancer than pre-menopausal women who did none, while post-menopausal women who did housework were 20 per cent less likely to develop the disease than those who did none.

The research, published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, said: "In this large cohort of women ... increased non-occupational physical activity and, in particular, increased household activity, were significantly associated with reduced breast cancer risk, independent of other potential risk factors.

"These results strengthen the consistency of findings about the protective role of physical activity on breast cancer risk."

Some 44,100 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year and more than 12,400 women die from the disease.

Dr Lesley Walker, of Cancer Research UK, which part-funded the study, said: "We already know that women who keep a healthy weight are less likely to develop breast cancer. This study suggests being physically active may also help reduce the risk and that something as simple... as doing the housework can help."

do these people know nothing of cause and effect?

i'm sure a woman who is, unknown to her, slowly developing a cancer has less energy to waste on crap that doesn't need to be done and most housework does fall in that category as long as everyone picks up after HIMself

if there's a correlation between the "type" of woman who cooks/cleans a lot and the "type" who doesn't - and their hormone levels, which could, in turn, affect the breast cancer susceptibility.

37. And none of these 'scientists' concluded
it might be for reasons other than the housework? Phurphoo upon them, bunch a hacks.

What kind of woman is able to do no housework? Either she's wealthy and can hire in help (but also has access to a richer, fattier diet amoung other factors), or she's an abject slob and is surrounded by carcinogens in every corner of her home (and again, probably eats a take-out diet of richer, fattier foods).

But for a small fee, I'll keep this rather rational perspective away from the as yet untainted eyes of Barefoot Mrs.Matcom.

Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 06:18 PM by xmas74
They're saying that anyone w/ a sedentary lifestyle could benefit from housework. Housework, if done properly (and everyone here should know what that means-actually cleaning instead of stuffing things everywhere) does count as a form of exercise.

Of course they went for the sensational headline instead of just saying "Exercise can make you healthier".

(And my daughter says hi. She's watching the damn hippo again.)

When hell freezes over, that's when. :eyes:

I bet playing golf in your free time does the same thing. Where's that study?

Maybe boinking the garbage man would be more effective? Or the cable guy? When does that study begin?

48. They could do a study about golf but some wouldn't like that.
I would think if you played a full 18 holes and WALKED (yes, I meant to stress walk) instead of rode around and if you drank bottled water to keep hydrated instead of buying drinks for everyone at the clubhouse afterward there would be mild to possibly moderate activity levels involved.

Notice I took away the cool golf cars and the beer, which is why you'll never see that study.

52. You notice they focus on breast cancer?
A decent housecleaning can be considered moderate exercise. Moderate exercise will benefit anyone-male or female of all ages. As I said somewhere else before, they chose "women" and "breast cancer" to sensasionalize the entire article.

Instead of saying "Moderate exercise can save your life" they'd rather play up the battle of the sexes. As to the ED ads-nah, better not say it or I'll lock this thread.
