... your concern...about not going to work tomorrow (and concern for my co-workers), let me try to explain. In the airlines, and it's this way with all of them, (I feel I can say that since I've worked for 3 of them now) you don't get an option of calling in sick on a holiday (which they consider the day before, the actual holiday, and the day after).
I already broke this cardinal rule Dec. 31, 2000. I refused to drive 40 miles into work during an ice storm...especially since I worked until midnight back then. When I called in I told them, "I can take drunks or I can take ice, but I can't take drunks on ice." So, they discipled me for that. And, you are given about 2 of these "occurrences" during your entire career with an airline. Then, last year, I was very sick on New Year's Day and made it into work, but couldn't handle going in on Jan. 2. So, I have two of these very bad "black marks" already.
It's a tough business, definitely, but I have no choice. That's why I decided to take a few hours off today (when it was authorized). So...even though tomorrow is not a holiday for most people, for airline people it is a *mandatory* work day if you are scheduled. I hope that sheds some light on the matter.
For the record, I love my job...as sick, mentally, as that might sound.
