Crocodile Who Ate Motorcyclist Probably Dead

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A crocodile who ate a motorcyclist before Christmas has probably been shot dead, Australian wildlife officials said, but armed patrols were on the lookout along a flooded outback river on Friday just in case.

A large saltwater crocodile was shot dead on Wednesday near where the attack took place and as soon as it bobs to the surface it will be taken to Darwin where its stomach will be cut open.

"The dead crocodile has not yet resurfaced, so wildlife officers and police are continuing to patrol the waterway, waiting," said a spokeswoman with the Northern Territory Parks & Wildlife Service.

"Rangers are confident this is the animal because crocodiles are territorial and it was shot near where the attack took place. Also it is the right size," she said.
