We're digitally importing lots of photos that have been in the old cardboard box for years!

She was an interesting woman; wanted to be a journalist, and was going to college at the University of Pittsburgh when she met my father, who was a lawyer who graduated from the University of Michigan. They eloped to Chevy Chase, Md. and married when Mom was 18 and Dad was 26. I was born one year and one month later, in May 1939. I am their only child. She spent the rest of her life working as Dad's legal secretary, with one transition to a secretarial job for a company in Medley, Florida. Mom once told me she was "envious" of me because I was able to pursue a career of my own.

"At The Seashore" by Edward Henry Potthast, an artist who lived from 1857 to 1927, looks a lot like this photo.

11. I love your picture!

Here is a picture of my mother and me from this summer. She recently moved to the Dominican Republic. I just spent my first holiday without my mom. It was very emotional.

19. Sorry to hear that. Why did she move away from you?

We did the exact opposite -- followed our daughter and her husband from Boston, MA to Portland, OR.

I was determined not to put distance between me and my child, as well as the two grandchildren they have produced since we moved here!

My mother lived thousands of miles away in Miami, Florida; her mother, my grandmother, was in Los Angeles, California. I just didn't want that to happen!

I wish I had been closer to my mother, but I just couldn't tolerate the hot and humid climate. I was born in a temperate place (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and still love seasonal climates.

Was your mother originally from the Dominican Republic? Does she have relatives there? It seems like an unusual choice, but I'm sure I don't know all the circumstances.

22. My mother's family is originally

from the DR, and she does have many cousins there. I think she just got too fed up with the cold and she could really stretch her income there.

She came for Thanksgiving and her 60th birthday for a total of 3 weeks, but Christmas seemed weird. I know she felt it too, she kept calling to see what I was doing. :)

I miss her terribly, but she is doing some really great things in her retirement. She is active in her community and is doing some great volunteer work with the residents of a neaby village. The women in the village make candles for income, and Mom, together with a friend, managed to secure free wax for them from Yankee Candle, along with some 500 chickens for them.

Anyhow, we do manage to see each other at least 4 times a year, and now I have a place on the beach (yes, walk out the door and there is sand) to visit during the cold upstate NY winters.

13. Something Old and something new

Here's my Uncle Leonard on his 1932 Indian. This was taken about 1947.

21. My 48 year old stepson just bought a motorcycle.

He's talking about taking a ride from Boston, Massachusetts, to Portland, Oregon -- alone. We have no idea what he will encounter and are quite worried about him. He takes medicine for manic depression and tells us he has been smoking marijuana for decades.

I've never been on a motorcycle, believe it or not... in 67 years of living. You guys look so comfortable1 I guess I'd take go a little ways down the street in the back if you provide the steering!

Love to you both -- wander carefully and watch out for the other guy/gal!

35. That sounds like a great trip

I've been riding for over 40 years. Traveled from Key West to Seattle back in 1978. Then crossed into Canada and rode from BC to Maine. Long rides are good for the soul. You get to see the country from a far different perspective than riding in a car. It is a much more physical experience.

Too bad about the marijuana thing. I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing, but I wouldn't trust my reactions on a bike after smoking or drinking. Better to ride sober then party at night or something.

36. My grandfather taught me

when I was real young. When I reached 14, the legal age for a less than 5 hp bike, I got my first bike. I've been on two wheels every since. Dezi loves the short rides I take her on and swears she is going to be a biker when she grows up. I believe her.

I love blonds, but don't have any in my family.

You and your brothers look so comfortable together.

Your father had a 1958 Oldsmobile 88 (I think that's right... or is it the 98?) My boyfriend's brother had one in white and charcoal -- it was a convertible!

Is that animal a shaggy goat? Where did your grandmother live?

Great Grandpa has a big white beard. I know nothing about my great grandparents -- but I do have a few pictures.

Thanks so much for posting these! This is kind of a watershed year for me, having lost someone important to me in January 2006, and another member of our extended family on December 1.

38. You're a sweetheart and I always respect your voice here

My Dad just wrapped up his visit to us yesterday. My Grandmother grew up in New Mexico and I do believe that's a goat she has hitched up. My Great Great Grandpa glowers in the same way my 8 year old son does when he's annoyed. Susannah just spit up on me about five minutes ago. I have four younger brothers now, my folks divorced and my Step Mom had twin Boys in 1982 to add to the two brothers you see in the photo.

I'm 47, I still have one Grandparent alive, she'll be 100 next May. I've been married for 11 years and have three kids and a kind and patient wife. My Folks are alive and kicking, although we nearly lost Dad to throat cancer three years ago. I've suffered the loss of friends of my youth to Car Wrecks, Depression and AIDS.

I know that loss is inevitable, and perhaps this is the time of year most appropriate to reflection on those losses, I hope that we can all have grace and satisfaction that we showed kindness to as many people as we could. Something tells me that whomever you lost this year misses you too.
