Best U.S. City To Get Drunk In
I lived in NY, SF, LA and D.C., but the best city by far to get drunk in is Chicago. Now, I've never been to Milwaukee, so I can't say for sure.

Never been. But I've been in NYC, Boston, San Fran, and LA, and I've gotta say...

New Orleans.

Hands down. Never so much debauchery in such a small area.

3. Chicago was good...
(in my mis-spent youth of course)...but more recently I have to say Green Bay is GREAT!

There is a complex of Hotels in the vicinity of Lambeau Field and there are numerous bars and restaurants within walking (crawling) distance of the hotels...

favorites:

THE Bar
Andruzzi's
Stadium View

If they ever close, I'll be wearing a black armband for a month.....

10. I think Madison, WI, for sheer volume of alcohol
There are a LOT of bars in Milwaukee, but most of them are smaller neighborhood places that tend to be a little xenophobic to visitors.

But if you can drink from every bar on the Downtown Bar Crawl in Madison, you should be proud (and then check yourself into detox)...Another highlight -- the Great Taste of the Midwest Homebrewers and Taster's Guild festival -- $30 gets you a selection of 500 beers, 2 oz at a time (although they don't advise trying them ALL...).

20. I KNEW someone would mention Madison
Best drinking town in the country, though Chicago and Milwaukee are also pretty good. The nice thing about Madison is that you can usually walk to all the best bars and when you're done you're likely to be within crawling distance of somebody's apartment or hotel room.

49. It's one of just a few towns (cities) I have loved especially
(but not just for drinking) and they include: San Francisco and Rio de Janiero. Those three wonderful cities have enthralled me at different times in my life and I am grateful.

I would include the town of Lucca, Italy in Tuscany but we are not talking about beautiful places, only places that are best to get drunk in. I don't get drunk but I do love these places...

53. I was in Rio (not Carnaval) many years ago, the summer between
my senior year of high school and my freshman year at college. I was entranced by Bossa Nova music, which had yet to come to the U.S. I still love it.

The women in Rio were the most beautiful women I had ever seen. Even the men were gorgeous. The poverty is horrible, however, and I understand that the crime there is pretty awful.

Flying into Rio over Corcavado and Sugar Loaf Mountain was just stupendous. It was so long ago that it was on a propellered airplane, if you can believe it, just before commercial jet travel. Those were the days of Braniff Airlines. Wow...

I must admit, I was always fearful of the criminal element, even though I am a native NYer. My parents would have nothing for me going to carnaval when I was in college (one of my classmates hailed from Rio), so I missed that chance, but we are still in touch, so some day...

57. Oh, you have to go! It is truly one of the most fabulous cities in the
world! If you have people there that you know, you probably would be safe! I was just there with my mother in a hotel. It's a wonder all was well!

I must add to that list Taormina, Sicily. I was there in December of 2005. I felt the same way about Taormina that I had felt for S.F., Rio, and N.O., that it was magical. If you have a chance, go to Taormina! Just beautiful. It is on the east coast of Sicily, easily reachable from the mainland of Italy and close to Mt. Etna, which I went up. And I had the best shopping there that I had in all of Sicily.

12. Savannah, Ga....I hate to be a homer .....
but Savannah is one of few cities that allow you to walk the streets with an open container (as long as it's in a plastic cup and less than 20 or 16 oz).
Savannah is known for its St. Patrick's Day parade and "quirky" subculture.
Savannah is a quiet southern town at first glance with tourist traps, like everywhere else, but just below the surface there is a wild "underworld" of old locals and weird visitors. Young and old mix with conservative and liberals all the same. No one cares about your politics or religiion, but emphasis is placed on your comfort level. To quote Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil (our Gone With The Wind) "In Charleston they ask who your family is, In Savannah they ask what you'd like to drink."
I spend many dollars and brain cells exploiting the open container laws- especially when the weather is nice. Another plus is the recent change in law that allows "high gravity" and micro brew beers to be sold around town. I love a good Belgium beer on a South Georgia night.
I used to live in New Orleans which would have to be my #2 drinking-est city. After living in Savannah and New Orleans, I was shocked to get a ticket in St. Louis (home of Budweiser) for walking from the parking lot to a hockey game with a beer in my hand. (I'm glad that they did not check my pockets).
But that is just my two cents.

15. You wanna get drunk, party, have some fun, dance, etc.
Then Chicago is the place. Leave the car at home, call a cab, and bar hop...

But if you want a long-term alcoholic haze filled with shots and beer, Bukowski Barstools, beernuts and bar dice, vintage jukeboxes playing cry-in-your-beer sad songs, smelly tavern bathrooms, puking in the alley, hardcore drinking buddies or solitary numbness, temporary meaningful booze-fueled relationships, lost days, weeks, months, or even years, then Milwaukee is definitely the place...

Take my word for it.

There isn't even a contest here. The only way someone can disagree with this is if they have never gotten drunk in New Orleans. There is always a place to party and people willing to do it with you...ALWAYS...in New Orleans. The bars do not close, EVER, in some cases.....

I like Chicago, got drunk there a few months ago, but it is no New Orleans.

Central Grocery probably was closed the longest after the Hurricane. I'm heading down this Sunday to aggravate Carolina Panther and Notre Dame Fans. I'm getting a twofer. Best place to have a nice cold beer, the balcony of Tropical Isle, corner of Bourbon and Orleans. Keep on thinking about it. I know there is a po-boy with your name on it just waiting for you to come on down.

remember, 99% of ND fans couldn't find South Bend on a map. Most would be surprised to learn that it is in Indiana. If you find such a person, I encourage you to point out to him where he can get a good shoe shine. :-)

Meanwhile, the Saints kicked enough tail that I don't get to aggravate any fans at all!

...out past the strip district? 36th street or thereabouts? I was there last week with my family. Never lived in Picksburg, but grew up north of there, in Lawrence county (yes - the place where the high school has a "drive your tractor to school" day.) Good beer, that church brewery. No good for a pub crawl, but the food was decent, albeit expensive.

Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 02:19 PM by KamaAina
(Bush** and others seem to be a bit unclear on that concept :grr: ) if for no other reason than the presence of the ubiquitous go-bars. That's right, folks, NOPD (Not Our Problem, Dude) doesn't care what you drink, as long as it's in a plastic container. All they care about is the glass container!

These days it probably helps to be staying in or near the Quarter, as RTA is shutting down around 10 or 11. :eyes:

Honorable mention goes to NYC, with its late closing times, easy walk (or stumble) ability, all-night transit, and unmatched collection of atmosphere-laden local bars (look for ones with a pressed tin ceiling).

edit: a full report on the State of N.O. Drinking, or as much of it as I can remember, will be fortcoming upon my return from the city on MLK weekend.

47. Used To Be Stillwater, Oklahoma! Oklahoma State (BTW Beat Alabama Today)
On the "strip", a street lined with bars, that you could carry beer from bar to bar, and drink in the street.

Streaker's night was the Thursday before Spring break and the street was packed with thousands of drunken people, you literally couldn't lift your arms, or you had them up already! Everyone seemed to be drunk and once in a while there was a streaker.

The party was stopped by the city who passed a law that said you couldn't drink in the street.

Not as much fun anymore after that.

It was a blast while it lasted.

There still were some great bars to party at and I have many fond memories of those years despite the fact that I used up my right to drink while there too! LOL
