He just murdered White Christmas on TV. It's embarrassing that so many people make over him as a good singer. What is wrong in America? Are we that starved for self-agrandizement?

1. he sounds like a refugee from a Bob Seger-tribute bar band to me
Edited on Mon Dec-25-06 09:09 AM by Algorem
ER could hire him to play doug ross's de-evolved cousin who shows up to be some kind of crappy excuse for a doctor who causes all kinds of trouble before they kill him off in a gang shootout or something

2. karaoke christmas
mygod, the stuff the radio stations play! for every old classic (or modern songs like 'last christmas' 'marys boychild' 'this is xmas, war is over' and the chris rae song 'driving home..' etc) the mediawhores play a 'medly of old favorites' by shanana or some damn thing. it's hideous-to have to wait through some endlessly replayed 'gramma got run into by the reindeer' or 'buy these shoes for dying mother' or the fukking chipmunk song :puke: or something sung by a stooge with mouthful of marbles that refers to ' i wanna hippopotomuses' (literally played every goddam hour on local radio!)!!! this year, for the first time, i find the entire buildup to the big day that was achieved by the playing of christmas music on radio has been destroyed by their pandering to tastes that giggle at the death of an drunk old lady on christmas eve....

3. He sang a jazzed up version.
He knew he doesn't have Bing's voice (for that matter, who does?) and knew he couldn't top Bing so he tried to aim it at a younger generation and take it in a different direction.

8. That's Katherine, not Christine..
Edited on Mon Dec-25-06 10:43 AM by Kahuna
And yes she is a much better singer than Taylor, but she was sabotaged at the end with an impossible original song that no one could have done any justice to. It was horrific. So, they gave Taylor a better song, though his was pretty bad too. He came across as a better performer than Kat. But he was going to win regardless. He was never in the bottom two or three.

9. Oh, that's right - Christine didn't sound quite right
But she would have been a much bigger 'star' than Hicks will ever be. It's too bad. I think people felt sorry for his premature grayness. If he'd have died his hair he wouldn't have gotten past the first round.

11. She will be a much bigger star. She's likely to go into acting
primarily. Her father is in the business, so Idol just gave her a platform to launch herself and get her name out. I read a while ago that she was being considered to play Wonder Woman, for which I think she would be a natural as she encompasses that Linda Carter style of voluptuous beauty. She also reminds me of Valerie Bertinelli.

As far as Taylor Hicks goes, he's likable, but I really can't see him going very far as a recording artist, except for in the south of course. Apparently they will buy anything American Idol puts out.

10. It's goofy as all get-out
If you win the 20,000 pyramid or Wheel of Fortune you aren't annointed as some sort of demi-god.

7. The Revenge of the South strikes again. Every Idol has been
a southerner. And the same way they gleefully forced that boob dubya on the rest of us, they do the same thing year after year on Idol, whether their southern contestant is the most talented or not.

12. That's not true..
Carrie Underwood is from Oklahoma. Last I checked, that is certainly not part of "The" South. Texas is the only Southwestern state that could pass as a southern state. It's a cultural thing.

Anyhow don't hate because we have many talented people in our region. :)

And I love Taylor's voice even if he isn't everyone's cup of tea. :D

embraced by the southern contingent as she was the only country singer of finalists. You cannot deny that she was embraced by the south as if she was one of their own.

The fact that you love Taylor's <sic> singing speaks volumes about you not me. Taylor is a cover band bar singer at best. We don't need a low budget Joe Cocker or Ray Charles. They did their thing. Taylor should find his own thing to do.

15. First this belongs in the Lounge and second, Hicks IS a good singer. He's original
and screw all the DU'ers who reflexively reject him cause he either won a tv contest called American Idol or who expect every singer to fit into some little box.

or Michael McDonald. Sheesh. Nobody EVER accused Taylor of being original. :eyes:
