Some might go so far as to suggest that it is a religion of sorts, a claim I am hard-pressed to refute. I still claim to be an atheist though. I have had glimpses into at least 3 prior lives, sorry no Cleopatras or Napoleons there, just regular folks. They were them and I am me and should I have another life after this one then that will be somebody else. Within my philosophy, it is possible to have some control over the next life by banking up both positive and/or negative karma.
For instance if you have a strong influence over someone in this life then it is likely that in your next life that influence will be repaid by that same person in his/her next life.

Another part of this philosophy holds that when one gets toward the last of his/her many lives then it becomes easier to remember the prior ones. (That notion makes me a bit sad). I can only hope that in the next one the world is in better shape than current projections suggest. This is, according to my philosophy, the very reason many of us here are progressives! We struggle to do our part to bring about that better world we would like to live in.

So my answer to what I would like to be in the next life...sorry I really don't know, I do know I want it to as comfortable as this one has been and I hope that some of those I cherish here and now are there with me in the next one too.

I have no memories of prior lives, but a psychic I visited long ago told me of my experiences.

It made a believer out of me.

I actually read your post up-thread and wrote out a lengthy response to it. Then when I was double checking the wording I changed my mind because I was worried that you might have felt that I was talking a bunch of metaphysical nonsense, so I never posted it.

I grew up having strange psychic experiences happen to me. As I got older I looked to many metaphysical teachings for explanations and never found any which even came close. Then a few years ago a young lady who wanted to know about those experiences turned me on to a book. That book nailed stuff that I knew from my own experiences to be real. I have read and reread the material and I have found a great deal of comfort and understanding from the teachings.

The book(s) are called Messages from Michael and More Messages from Michael. They are a bit rare to find in original form but just recently they have been reprinted in hardback. I will get you a link if you wish but check out that first chapter in order to see if it speaks to you at all.
