Today's Sign that we are a country of Stupid, Stupid, Stupid People.
January 1st, 2004: I opened my door to find the newest edition of the The Yellow Pages on my welcome mat. Across the bottom of the cover is a printed warning.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS DIRECTORY WHILE OPERATING A MOVING VEHICLE.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have no words.

4. Us folks in Alabama don't need any help in driving
bad. We do fine all by ourselves.

8. Oh, please...
If you wanted to use a cell phone in Alabama, you'd need an awfully long string between your tin cans!

Just joshin' ya!

2. If they are going to have such warnings
they should use simpler words.

5. Another sign...
...It is now against the law to watch TV and drive in CA. (Really. I am not making this up. I just heard it on NPR)

6. Is Alabama the state
Where it's illegal to drive while blindfolded?

I can't argue with the logic of such a prohibition... but I do wonder if was ever that big a problem.

10. Anecdote about an accident
My boyfriend was driving south on I-95 a few years ago, and witnessed a car swerving out of control and smashing into a tree. He and other drivers in the vicinity stopped and rushed to see if they could render assistance.

Thankfully, the driver was not injured -- there was an airbag that saved his life. He asked my boyfriend to help him find his reading glasses, which were knocked off when the airbag deployed. He had been reading his DayMinder when he lost control of the car.

Yes Virginia -- there are people as dumb as shit.

11. It's not just Alabama--true story from Chicago
I was taking a cab down Lake Shore Drive early one morning and noticed that the man driving in the lane next to us was reading the Wall Street Journal. The paper was open and spread across the steering wheel, while he drove at 45 miles an hour.

12. My old roommate shaved with his electric razor every
morning on the way to work. He kept the charger at work even and charged it there. He left it in the glove box when he came home.

13. Or the patronising, insulting commercial on TV about using only products
whose packages have high amounts of post-consumer content. Where to find the label, what the label means, all spoken by a soft-spoken woman as if we're all a gaggle of 8 year olds. x(

Cool country, huh?
