I believe there is a no subscription form of it, and you can purchase downloads ala carte.

9. Not in the slightest
I use EMule. But then I do go out and purchase the CDs I like and wipe the stuff that sucks. Its very difficult to find new music in a pay first system. And the stuff the companies market and push ... well its that very business model that I site as being the death of music in the US.
