The Shadow family just gained a new member
We just apodpted a two year old coon hound named Katie. She was originally saved from a sick bastard down this way that was running a puppy farm but basically abusing and starving the dogs. The owners we got her from simply can't keep her anymore. A little more hyper than I'd like but a beautiful dog.

8. A great big congrats and thanks!
from a dog lover and a volunteer for a dog rescue organization. You just brought a lot of love into your home. She'll calm down once you gain her trust, won't be long I predict. :toast:

9. Coon Hounds are great dogs
they are smart and housebreak easily. heaven forbid someone tries to come into your house uninvited, great watchdogs. We had a black and tan one for several years. Buy plenty of food, they often weigh around 100 lbs.

16. I may have spoken to soon
I'm finding rapidly I think the dog may have some problems that the owners weren't forthcoming about. I understand strange surroundings and all but we haven't been able to get the dog to "do her business" outside the house, depsite about 15 walks now. We take her out and she locks on various targets (cats are going to be a problem as in any that come in our yard will be dead) and maybe goes a little but then as soon as she comes in, she pees the carpet. About 10 times now. She clearly has either a bad flea problem (easily solveable) or a serious urinary tract infection (too expensive for us) because she is constantly biting at herself to the point of almost injuring herself. I don't know what to do now. This is a great dog and I feel like a shit but I don't know if my wife and I have the time, money or energy to raise a problem dog or sick dog. That is the main reason we've been seeking an adult, already spayed animal. This one has a tragic past and I understand that but it certainly isn't acting like a house trained pet and I'm not sure of the success rate in training adult animals like that. I've been trying for about 6 hours now with no luck. I've taken the dog out for walks that we're at least 20 minutes long each. Any advice would be helpful or tell me to suck it up and care for the dog and that might help too.

17. cookies
you could try giving her a cookie or other treat after she does her business outside.

we had this problem with a foster greyhound, she would do a little outside, and then come in and finish it on the floor...

we started bringing a cookie with us when we took her outside. Gave her a piece of it if she did her business. walked her a some more, and if a piece of cookie if she did more business. Plus a whole cookie when she came back into the house. Lavish lots of praise and lovies.

took about 2 weeks for her to really get it.

One of our own greyhounds doesn't like to do her business while on lead. It takes forever walking her around if she is on lead. But if we let her into her run, she does it right away.

Don't know how your yard is set up, but if there is a fenced in area, you may want to let her off lead. and of course follow up and "doing of the business" with a cookie/treat and lots of lovies

18. Could be a UTI....
which could be caused by the food she was on, or an allergy to something. If you got her from a rescue org., get in touch with them, maybe they can help you out with treating it? Sometimes they get meds at a discount.

Are you walking her on a leash? If not, try that, even in your yard, and make a great big fool of yourself when she does it, get down on the ground, praise her give her a lot of love, and a small treat. When she goes in the house, you have to catch her, so you'll have to keep her confined and keep a close watch on her. Give her a stern "NO", and immediately get her back outside. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Eventually she will realize that your home is her "cave" and she won't want to do it in there anyway. It takes time with some dogs. If you can borrow or invest in a portable carpet cleaner. Those are a dog owners best friend. I think they are about $50.

It takes a lot of patience, but it will be worth it in the end!
