Going to TV rehab
I am planning to give up TV for the new year. I know people that never watch TV and they seem fine. I'm looking for ideas to fill my recovery time.

1. Oh, I can think of a few things...
But until then, TV is fine by me. :)

2. good for you.
my tivo broke and i had a momentary sense of relief that i wouldn't have to watch so much tv. then i thought about all the christmas specials i was going to miss and i was sad...

why don't you visit your tv-free friends and see what they get up to? or failing that just glare at them reproachfully

4. Read some horrifying real news.
Start with reading about Darfur and go from there. That will eventually make it impossible for you to ever enjoy the base, meaningless entertainment of t.v. ever again.

5. I believe there is life after TV
Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 03:26 PM by liberal hypnotist
Here's my problem:

7pm Chris Matthews (hope someone will come on the show that beats up on him and make him blubber.) Opps, Republican operative. Look through phone book for TV addiction intervention. None?

8pm (conflict) Jon Stewart and switch to Oberman at commercials. Oh! Oh! both interesting shows. Think, "if only I had Tivo. No stop thinking that!" Then 9 pm! Channel flipping. I want to stop but I can't. Just one more flip. Maybe something will be on soon. What if there's a great program that is fun, educational and worthwhile? Umh? One more flipping cycle. Rerun cop and murder programs, arrest minorities, cooking shows, modeling shows. I think, "Is there something wrong with me? why don't I like all that TV has to offer? Why am I different? Maybe, I need real drugs to compliment TV? No that got me in trouble before. Rather not think of that." 70 channels nothing. 10:30pm Nothing, absolutely nothing, again. $55. per month with tax. Wait, tax? Who gets that tax?

Shame and guilt. Another night of flipping channels. I'm tired. I promise, "not tomorrow night no way, that was my last flipping session."

Next night. Chris Matthews..... "Sunshine Bridge is only 45 minutes away. No retaining fences. Out before I hit the water."

7. blow up the TV
throw away the paper
move to the country
build you a home
plant a little garden
eat a lotta peaches
try to find Jesus on your own

I got the bluegrass in me :)

You can do it. Go to the library a lot.

11. LOL Nope.
Just lay in a supply of Hazel Dickens, and Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys, to start. You'll be juuuuuuust fine. :)

Actually, start with this one.

:hi:

10. good for you-- I haven't had TV in two decades....
On the rare occasions when I watch TV now it appalls me. Quitting TV is like quitting smoking-- once you get over the withdrawal your head clears and you can't believe you ever wasted time watching that crap. I can no more imagine getting back into TV culture than I can imagine taking up cigarettes, or meth. You'll be amazed at how much more fulfilling your life is when you don't spend significant portions of it sitting passively in front of the box.

12. People like you impress me.
Wow! That's great. People who are not addicted to TV can't understand what the big deal is. I'm going cold turkey Jan 1. Is Tivo TV?
