27. WRONG!
The cove itself (in Mulege) is very shallow, with a sand bottom. The narrow opening to the Sea of Cortez is at the south end. The east side of the cove is formed by a two-mile-long gravel bank with a few mangroves growing along its bayward side. These mangroves have small oysters growing on their roots.

38. Absolutely, you win a Hangtown fry!
Hangtown Fry History

Hangtown fry could possibly be the first California cuisine. It consists of fried breaded oysters, eggs, and fried bacon, cooked together like an omelet. In the gold-mining camps of the late 1800s, Hangtown Fry was a one-skillet meal for hungry miners who struck it rich and had plenty of gold to spend. Live oysters would be brought to the gold fields in barrels of sea water after being gathered in and around San Francisco Bay. Such a meal cost approximately $6.00, a fortune in those days.

Hangtown Fry

1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon milk

Breading mixture of cracker crumbs and bread crumbs

Oil

3 oysters (or about 1650 oysters from Mulege)

2 slices bacon

2 eggs

Dip the oysters in egg-wash and then breading. Pan-fry until three-fourths cooked. While doing this, fry the bacon in another skillet until just before it becomes crisp.

Beat the eggs lightly. Place the bacon like railroad tracks off-center in a frying pan, pour a bit of the egg over the bacon. Place the oysters on bacon and pour the remaining eggs over. Cook and then fold the omelets over.

Makes 1 serving.

103. Still crap
When I was (marginally) involved with the Tennessee Cave Survey several years ago, there were already 10,000 known - and named - caves. With the addition of several hundred new caves each year, we're probably not far from 11,000 right now, with an estimated 15,000 more waiting to be discovered.

51. yeah, clarinets all right...
I started in the 6th grade...its a funny story...cause I got stuck with the clarinet because I didn't know any other instruments at the time. The band instructor asked me what instrument I wanted to play...and the only instrument I knew at the time was clarinet...so I blurted out clarinet...and I got stuck with it. But, it wasn't so bad...got into pep band, jazz band, and honor band my senior year...and I thought I didn't have a shot...cause in our own high school band, I wasn't even first chair...

Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 01:08 PM by seawolf
No carnivorous land mammal has ever been longer than 15 feet (this includes speculation on total size from incomplete fossils.)

Elephants are the closest living relatives of Indricotherium, the largest land mammal to ever live-16-17 feet tall and 26-27 feet long.

There have been anecdotal accounts claiming that Megatherium americanum (Giant ground sloth-South America), Megalania priscea (massive carnivorous lizard-Australia), and Smilodon fatalis (saber-toothed cat-North and South America) have survived into modern times.

Genetic is for life, so, if you have it at birth, you have it throughout your lifetime.
Your scenario can only mean: it's a baby who can't sleep, genetically, and who dies after 3 days of not sleeping. I sure hope not.

147. I heard that news article - they die in about 6 months
its a genetic disease that has been traced to one family in Italy. When people with the gene reach about age 50, they are physically unable to sleep, and die about 6 months after first showing symptoms.

The sad part is, its a dominant gene, so people who carry it have a 50% chance of giving it to their children. But because it doesnt manifest until later in life, theres no way to know if you are a carrier until after you have had children.

The complications of the human epiglottis required to make speech possible mean that you cannot have both your airways and your oesophagus open at the same time. This means you can't breathe while you swallow, and probably also means you can't sneeze while you burp.

174. Correct!
The American Institute of Homeopathy organized a year or two before the AMA came into existence, and it still survives today.

There's even a monument in Washington, DC dedicated to the Institute. If you've seen Team America: World Police, you saw Gary deep in thought at the monument near the end of the montage.

8.5 was my very first guess, but I thought you might consider it to be a private matter so I left my answer vague. :hi: :)

180. Amazing. Criminals have to be able to use that somehow.
If I have a pumpkin I only need 82% more of someone's DNA to frame then for that string of diamond heists I plan on carrying out. ;)

Weird fact to be sure. Thanks for letting me know.
