Do you have a motor-mouth friend?
This morning as we met in front of my house for our daily 3 mile walk, I asked Arthur a question about epidurals. I'd just read some mildly disturbing news about them and our daughter is expecting in late May. He's a retired ob/gyn.

That question was the last thing I said for the entire walk.
I got a 45 minute monologue on epidurals, drugs involved, epidurals vs spinals, other methods of pain abatement during births, one tangent on drug companies in general (money-grubbing blood-suckers), another tangent about a guy he was in med school with, and on and on and on.

whew

By the time we got to his house I was thankful for the final 10 minutes home in total silence.
:eyes:

Oh, I read that epidurals may hinder breast feeding.

1. Geez
Made you sorry you asked. :eyes:

I saw a vanity plate on a car today "Gabzilla" I don't think I'll be starting a conversation with the owner any time soon. :)

5. He's a sweet guy, one of my closest friends.
I've known him for almost 30 years.

He can tell stories for days, and most of them are fascinating.
At least the first 2 or 3 times you hear them.

He's a Brit who grew up in British East Africa (his dad was a district commissioner), went to med school in Liverpool, served in the British Army in the Cameroons, and immigrated over here in the early 70s.

I'm trying to get him to write a book about growing up in Africa in the 30s and 40s.

2. Yes - both motor-mouth and know-it-all
Actually, she's not a friend. She's a business associate. She comes in ostensibly to discuss my wine needs but I generally get a lengthy breakdown on exactly what her large extended family is up to and what her friends have done and what she told so-and-so at another store to do and how he doesn't know anything and she knows everything and every fucking word of every single conversation she's had with anybody over the last several days (including all the "What?"s, "Huh?"s and "Really?"s) and how she does everything which of course is the right way everything should be done and anything else she can think of.

I've learned to kind of tune her out, though I fuck with her occasionally by pointing out some of her more obvious fallacies. :)

6. I got one of those, plus he has the Napoleon complex.
I have known short men who were perfectly sane.
This guy has a screaming overabundance of testosterone or something.
Eveything he owns or does is the biggest, bestest, fastest, baddest, most high powered, mucho-macho, etc., etc., etc.

3. Yes.
I have a friend who can talk endlessly about her job...she never even notices if you respond in any way.

You can do a crossword puzzle or something.
They don't notice.

4. There's an orchestra contractor here who's got a bionic mouth.
He'll tell all the sordid details of the people he's already contracted for the gig before he tells you the date, time, location, and pay. And, while the facts about the people never change, the facts about the gig always do. For example, at the beginning of the conversation, you'll be talking about a 2 hour rehearsal from 1-3pm followed by the performance at 8 for $200. Then you find out that there's a sound check before the performance at 6pm. Oh, and there's a long dinner break in the middle of the performance, but you shouldn't be there any later than 11pm.

It's a little like taking a gig from a greasy used car salesman.

I won't work for him unless I'm really desperate.

9. I hate 'oh yeahs'.
"Can you come to dinner Friday?"
"Sure, sounds great. Thanks"
"Oh, yeah. Bring a vegetable. It's a potluck."

10. Ach, yes!

I've gotten to the point where I can put down the phone, pick it up 15 minutes later and she has no idea I haven't been around. But what makes it worse is she's a drama queen and totally self-absorbed. Ask me again why we're "friends."

ETA: On a side note, epidurals are one of those topics that will get both sides hot under the collar. Personally, I think they are worth avoiding if at all possible but sometimes they can come in handy. I gave birth three times without so much as a tylenol, but my sister with her only child definitely needed an epidural or she wouldn't have had the strength to push. Good heavens, she was in labor with one twice as long as I was in labor with three! Look into doulas. They are worth their weight in platinum.

11. My mother was like that.
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 07:18 PM by Kutjara
I dreaded her frequent phonecalls because she would drone on for hours. She never listened to a word that was said, only pausing to take the occasional breath. I often thought about taping myself saying, "Uh huh. Really? You don't say. Gosh. Uh huh." for an hour or three and then just playing it back over the phone while I went to the pub.

Since her death, she's quieted down a bit, fortunately.
