1. Something I Can Never Have - Nine Inch Nails
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKRpKmM_I14 (ignore the video, the song is what you want. Lyrics below)

I still recall the taste of your tears
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore
Scraping through my head, 'til I don't want to sleep anymore

You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I'm down to just one thing
And I'm starting to scare myself
You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I just want something
I just want something I can never have

You always were the one to show me how
Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now
This thing is slowly taking me apart
Grey would be the color, if I had a heart

Come on, tell me

You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I'm down to just one thing
And I'm starting to scare myself
You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I just want something
I just want something I can never have

In this place it seems like such a shame
Though it all looks different now, I know it's still the same
Everywhere I look, you're all I see
Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be

Come on, tell me

You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I'm down to just one thing
And I'm starting to scare myself
You make this all go away
You make it all go away
I just want something
I just want something I can never have

I just want something I can never have...

73. I agree with that...It's also a surprisingly hard voice to do...
I've never had any problem nailing most of the baritones (Pop, Morrison, Bowie, McCulloch, Cash, Cave, etc...) but Curtis' voice had a very unique quality. A lot of it had to do with where and when he chose to go flat, but still there is an elusive element which is indeed hard to "get" exactly

12. Another one-"Late at Night" Buffalo Tom
For some reason this song makes me bawl like a baby. Loved it ever since it was in an episode of "My So-called Life".

"I close my door at night,
But they get in all right,
And she turns on the light.
I held her hands so tight,
'Cause words don't come out right,
And she sees things at night.
Me, I'm closer to the door,
I don't get scared no more,
But I don't know the score.
If I could hold them in my hand,
I'd make them understand.
I'm not a haunted mind,
I'm not a thoughtless kind.
If I could put them in a jar,
I know they wouldn't scar,
I'd do it if I could,
I hope you know I would.
I close my door at night,
But she gets in all right
So I turn on the light.
I held her hand too tight,
Too hard to make it right,
So I could sleep at night.
If I could hold them in my hand,
I'd make them understand.
I'm not a haunted mind,
I'm not a thoughtless kind.
If I could put them in a jar,
I know they wouldn't scar,
I'd do it if I could,
I hope you know I would.
I'd do it if I could,
I hope you know I would. "

Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 04:07 PM by jpak
a total bummer dirge...

nine million rainy days
have swept across my eyes
thinking of you
and this room becomes a shrine
thinking of you
and the way you are
sends the shivers to my head
you're going to fall
you're going to fall down dead
as far as i can tell
i'm being dragged from here to hell
and all my time in hell
is spent with you
i have ached for you
i have nothing left to give
for you to take
i have no more empty heart
or limbs to break
and the way you are
sends the shivers to my head
you're going to fall down dead
as far as i can see
there is nothing left of me
and all my time in hell
was spent with you

22. "Old Shep" gets me every damn time
Now, when I was a lad
And old Shep was a pup
Over hills and valleys we'd stray
Just a boy and his dog
We were both full of fun
We'd grown up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin' hole
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old Shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in and helped drag me out

Now the years rolled along
And last he grew old
His eyesight was fast growing dim
And one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can't do no more for him Jim

So with tremblin hands
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Shep's faithful head
But I, I just couldn't do it
I wanted to run
I wish they'd shoot me instead

So I threw down that old gun
And ran right up to his side
He laid his faithful old head right on my knee
And friends, I stroked the best pal
That a man ever found
I even cried so I could scarcely see

Now old shep.. he knew
Knew he was gonna go
Cuz he reached down and
Licked at my hand
And he looked up at me
Just as much as to say
I hate it too but... you understand

Now old Shep has gone
Where the good doggies go
And no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
There's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home

24. Windows and Walls - so depressing about
finding yourself alone and old

Windows And Walls

Up every morning long before day
Cooking her breakfast alone
She quietly dresses and pulls up the shade
And sits in the chair by the phone
But nobody ever comes by anymore
Nobody ever calls
Most days she sits and just stares
At the windows and walls
Windows and walls
Children all married, husband's passed on
Nothing but time on her hand
Most of her mornings are spent in her dreams
Or making her sad little plans
Maybe she'll go to the corner today
And pick up the new McCall's
If just to escape for an hour from her windows and walls
Windows and walls, windows and walls
The clock on the mantel chiming the hours
Must be the loneliest sound
She washes her dishes and waters her flowers
And afterwards has to sit down
Sometimes she still can remember a child
Playing with china dolls
Now all that she's left
Are these memories and windows and walls
Windows and walls
Windows and walls
Windows and walls (day after day)....

120. Actually, the lyrics can be interpreted to be pretty uplifting.
I notice you posted twice about this song, so you obviously feel strongly about it. And you are probably not alone, since he has a very unique singing style.

But those of us who are his fans (and there are quite a few, IMO) would probably list "Suzanne" as one of his best songs.

I hope you'll listen to other versions before you make a final judgement on the lyrics, if possible. I strongly recommend Judy Collins' cover of the song.

Here are the lyrics, in case you'd like to read them:

Suzanne
by Leonard Cohen

Suzanne takes you down to
her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body
with your mind.

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body
with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body
with her mind.

"Come down off your throne and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason I've been waiting so long.
Somebody holds the key.

But I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time
And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home.

Come down on your own and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason I've been waiting all these years.
Somebody holds the key.

Chorus

But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
Still I can't find my way home,
And I ain't done nothing wrong,
But I can't find my way home."

30. "Martha" by Tom Waits:
"Operator, number, please:
it's been so many years
Will she remember my old voice
while I fight the tears?
Hello, hello there, is this Martha?
this is old Tom Frost,
And I am calling long distance,
don't worry 'bout the cost.
'Cause it's been forty years or more,
now Martha please recall,
Meet me out for coffee,
where we'll talk about it all.

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I feel so much older now,
and you're much older too,
How's your husband?
and how's the kids?
you know that I got married too?
Lucky that you found someone
to make you feel secure,
'Cause we were all so young and foolish,
now we are mature.

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I was always so impulsive,
I guess that I still am,
And all that really mattered then
was that I was a man.
I guess that our being together
was never meant to be.
And Martha, Martha,
I love you can't you see?

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I remember quiet evenings
trembling close to you..."

32. "Landslide", Stevie Nicks.
"I took my love, I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
till the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail thru the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life

Well, Ive been afraid of changing
cause Ive built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
Im getting older too

Oh, take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down

If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well maybe the landslide will bring it down"

Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 09:14 PM by enigmatic
From the greatest album of the 90's, Spiderland:

Goodnight my love
Remember me as you fall to sleep
Fill your pockets with the dust and the memories
That rises from the shoes on my feet

I won't be back here
Though we may meet again

I know it's dark outside
Don't be afraid
Everytime I ever cried from fear
Was just a mistake that I made
Wash yourself in your tears
And build your church
On the strength of your faith

Please
Listen to me
Don't let go
Don't let this desperate moonlight leave me
With your empty pillow
Promise me the sun will rise again

I too am tired now
Embracing thoughts of tonight's dreamless sleep
My head is empty
My toes are warm
I am safe from harm...

36. "Wendell Gee" by R.E.M. I'm sobbing, if you don't mind.
"That's when Wendell Gee takes a tug
Upon the string that held the line of trees
Behind the house he lived in
He was reared to give respect
But somewhere down the line he chose
To whistle as the wind blows
Whistle as the wind blows with me

He had a dream one night
That the tree had lost its middle
So he built a trunk of chicken wire
To try to hold it up
But the wire, the wire turned to lizard skin
And when he climbed inside
There wasn't even time to say
Goodbye to Wendell Gee
So whistle as the wind blows
Whistle as the wind blows with me

There wasn't even time to say
Goodbye to Wendell Gee
So whistle as the wind blows
Whistle as the wind blows with me
If the wind were colors
And if the air could speak
Then whistle as the wind blows
Whistle as the wind blows"

37. Is it Real by Yoko Kanno
Figurines that fall like leaves,
Then diisappear,
Keep calling,
Is it real? Is it real?

Dark machines that wheeze and breathe,
And mark the air,
Appalling
What is real? What is real?

This world can really be too much,
I can't take another day.
I guess that i've just had enough
My mind slipping far away.
I'm falling in and out of touch,
Can someone please explain?

Set my mind for open sky,
But couldn't fly,
And so sadly,
What am I? what am I?

Sullen eyes shed tear-drop lies,
then criticise
Now loving,
What is real? What is real?

It's really all become too much,
I'm not sure what I should feel,
I guess I've really had enough,
I don't know know if this is real.
I'm crashing in and out of touch,
Can anyone explain?

38. James McMurtry "We Can't Make it Here"
"We Can't Make it Here"
Lyrics

Vietnam Vet with a cardboard sign
Sitting there by the left turn line
Flag on the wheelchair flapping in the breeze
One leg missing, both hands free
No one's paying much mind to him
The V.A. budget's stretched so thin
And there's more comin' home from the Mideast war
We can't make it here anymore

That big ol' building was the textile mill
It fed our kids and it paid our bills
But they turned us out and they closed the doors
We can't make it here anymore

See all those pallets piled up on the loading dock
They're just gonna set there till they rot
'Cause there's nothing to ship, nothing to pack
Just busted concrete and rusted tracks
Empty storefronts around the square
There's a needle in the gutter and glass everywhere
You don't come down here 'less you're looking to score
We can't make it here anymore

The bar's still open but man it's slow
The tip jar's light and the register's low
The bartender don't have much to say
The regular crowd gets thinner each day

Some have maxed out all their credit cards
Some are working two jobs and living in cars
Minimum wage won't pay for a roof, won't pay for a drink
If you gotta have proof just try it yourself Mr. CEO
See how far 5.15 an hour will go
Take a part time job at one of your stores
Bet you can't make it here anymore

When Im gone, gone, you dont have to worry long,
long as I can see the light.

Guess Ive got that old travlin bone, cause this feelin wont leave me alone.
But I wont, wont be losin my way, no, no
long as I can see the light.

Yeah! yeah! yeah! oh, yeah!

47. Sam Stone by John Prine comes to mind.
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 09:32 PM by unsavedtrash
Sam Stone came home,
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm....
Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...
Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill.

Or maybe "I want you" by Elvis Costello

Oh my baby baby I love you more than I can tell
I dont think I can live without you
And I know that I never will
Oh my baby baby I want you so it scares me to death
I cant say anymore than I love you
Everything else is a waste of breath
I want you
Youve had your fun you dont get well no more
I want you
Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful darling you might fall
I want you
I woke up and one of us was crying
I want you
You said young man I do believe youre dying
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget
I want you
Since when were you so generous and inarticulate
I want you
Its the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
Its the way your shoulders shake and what theyre shaking for
Its knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
I want you
Its the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
I want you
He tossed some tatty compliment your way
I want you
And you were fool enough to love it when he said
I want you
I want you
The truth cant hurt you its just like the dark
It scares you witless
But in time you see things clear and stark
I want you
Go on and hurt me then well let it drop
I want you
Im afraid I wont know where to stop
I want you
Im not ashamed to say I cried for you
I want you
I want to know the things you did that we do too
I want you
I want to hear he pleases you more than I do
I want you
I might as well be useless for all it means to you
I want you
Did you call his name out as he held you down
I want you
Oh no my darling not with that clown
I want you
Youve had your fun you dont get well no more
I want you
No-one who wants you could want you more
I want you
Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up
I want you
I want you
Im going to say it once again til I instill it
I know Im going to feel this way until you kill it
I want you
I want you

48. Our Town by Iris Dement
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 10:14 PM by notawol
Here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FikZwgj89HI
This one is even more depressing, you're gonna love it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVsOewC8GAE

And you know the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.

Up the street beside that red neon light,
That's where I met my baby on one hot summer night.
He was the tender and I ordered a beer,
It's been forty years and I'm still sitting here.

But you know the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.

It's here I had my babies and I had my first kiss.
I've walked down Main Street in the cold morning mist.
Over there is where I bought my first car.
It turned over once but then it never went far.

And I can see the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.

I buried my Mama and I buried my Pa.
They sleep up the street beside that pretty brick wall.
I bring them flowers about every day,
but I just gotta cry when I think what they'd say.

If they could see how the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.

Now I sit on the porch and watch the lightning-bugs fly.
But I can't see too good, I got tears in my eyes.
I'm leaving tomorrow but I don't wanna go.
I love you, my town, you'll always live in my soul.

But I can see the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on, I gotta kiss you goodbye,
But I'll hold to my lover,
'Cause my heart's 'bout to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to my town, to my town.
I can see the sun has gone down on my town, on my town,
Goodnight.
Goodnight.

and a DJ on one of the local radio stations was, apparently, experiencing some emotional turmoil...he just fucking lost it, started crying on the air, and played that song something like five or six times in a row. (That's still one of the most bizarre things I've ever heard on commercial radio.)

59. Life on Mars?
Always depresses me, somehow...

David Bowie - Life On Mars Lyrics

It's a God awful small affair
To the girl with the
mousey hair,
But her mummy is yelling, "No!"
And her
daddy has told her to go,
But her friend is no where to be
seen.
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the
seats with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the
silver screen,
But the film is sadd'ning bore
For
she's lived it ten times or more.
She could spit in
the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors
Fighting in the dance hall.
Oh man!
Look at those cavemen go.
It's the freakiest
show.
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong
guy.
Oh man!
Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show.
Is there life on
Mars?

It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow.
Now the workers
have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale
again.
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibeza
to the Norfolk Broads.
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns,
But the film is a
sadd'ning bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or
more.
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to
focus on

Sailors
Fighting in the dance hall.
Oh man!
Look at those cavemen go.
It's the
freakiest show.
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up
the wrong guy.
Oh man!
Wonder if he'll ever
know
He's in the best selling show.
Is there life
on Mars?

personally I like Johnny

hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

But I need an airplane
I can feel the distance as you breathe

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you
In your eyes I saw a future together
You just look away in the distance

China decorates our table
Funny how the cracks dont seem to show
Pour the wine dear
You say well take a holiday
But we never can agree on where to go

Sometimes I think you want to me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you
In your eyes I saw a future together
You just look away in the distance

China all the way to new york
Maybe you got lost in mexico
Youre right next to me
I think that you can hear me
Funny how the distance learns to grow

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you

I can feel the distance getting close

WINTER:
Snow can wait, I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose, get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart when I think of winter
I put my hand in my fathers glove

I run off where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice you must learn to stand up for yourself
Cause I cant always be around

He says when you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that Ill always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Boys get discovered as winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun
Years go by and Im here still waiting
Withering where some snowman was

Mirror mirror wheres the crystal palace
But I only can see myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know, dad, the ice is getting thing

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that Ill always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Hair is grey and the fires are burning
So many dreams on the shelf
You say I wanted you to be proud
I always wanted that myself

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gona change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that Ill always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Never change

HAS ANYONE EVER WRITTEN ANYTHING FOR YOU

Has anyone ever written anything for you
In all your darkest hours
Have you ever heard me sing
Listen to me now
You know I'd rather be alone
Than be without you
Don't you know

Has anyone ever given anything to you
In your darkest hours
Did you ever give it back
Well, I have
I have given that to you
If it's all I ever do
This is your song

And the rain comes down
There's no pain and there's no doubt
It was easy to say
I believed in you everyday
If not for me
Then do it for the world

Has anyone ever written anything for you
In your darkest sorrow
Did you ever hear me sing
Listen to me now
You know I'd rather be alone
Than be without you
Don't you know

So, if not for me, then
Do it for yourself
If not for me then
Do it for the world
Poet...priest of nothing
Poet...priest of nothing

Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 12:50 AM by idgiehkt
Gloomy Sunday is one of the most, if not THE most, depressing songs ever written. When I'm listening to Billie today and come to that song I skip it. I think the part about "I was dreaming" was added as an afterthought.

also, I always thought this song by Enya was really beautiful until I read a translation of the lyrics
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXTAQKLFaWk

She's singing in Gaelic and saying...well, I'll just post the lyrics in English
Na Laetha Geal M'óige -
The bright days of my youth

(In honor of my father and mother)

Looking back over my youth
I see I was contented
Without knowledge of death
I was young then

Now I am worried
During the course of the day.
(Oh sorrow!)

The bright days of my youth
Were full of hope
The big road that was before us then
Was what was destined to be,
Bye bye...

I still think it's pretty, but damn...

(here's another video with anime clips if that one doesn't play out:

104. I do believe I'm a masochist
Cause I love this song. I especially love the Sarah Brightman version... that whole Sarah cd (La Luna) is the reason I don't have a gun in my house. :) There's a movie out now about this song & why it was known as the Hungarian suicide song. It's on pay for view here...I may watch it tonight now that my interest is piqued. And you're right..the last verse was added after Holiday's producers determined it to be too depressing. I kinda like it though. It works, IMO.

I've always loved Enya and have every one of her cds. All of the Celtic female voices are so beautiful.

90. Leonard Cohen -- Story of Isaac
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 01:05 AM by astral
The door it opened slowly
my father he came in
I was nine years old
And he stood so tall above me
his blue eyes they were shining
and his voice was very cold

He said I've had a vision and you know I'm strong and holy
I must do what I've been told
So we started up the mountain
I was running, he was walking
and his axe was made of gold

The trees they got much smaller
the lake a lady's mirror
we stopped to drink some wine
And he threw the bottle over
it broke a minute later
and he put his hand on mine

Thought I saw an eagle but it might have been a vulture
I never could decide
Then my father built an alter
He looked once behind his shoulder
He knew I would not hide

And you who build these alters now
to sacrifice your children
you must not do it anymore
A scheme is not a vision
and you never have been tempted
by a demon or a God

You who stand above them now your hatchets blunt and bloody
You were not there before
When I lay upon the mountain
and my father's hand was trembling
with the beauty of the Word

And if you call me brother now
forgive me if I inquire
just according to whose plan?
When it all comes down to dust
I will kill you if I must
I will help you if I can

When it all comes down to dust I will help you if I must
I will kill you if I can
Have mercy on our uniform
Man of peace, or man of war
the peacock spreads his fan.

92. Here's One I Just Wrote!
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 04:06 AM by uhhuh

We are rehearsing it for our next show for my band, Avenue In Oceania:

The tired eyes of incorruptible youth

Of dreams you once had, struck barren by the truth,

It was never so much a lie,

As a glaring misconception...

A packaged fable, that love could be enough.

Shining towers fall, blackened as the sky becomes,

As a forest you can't see your way out of.

What's become of you, you say,

But I never was anything,

Just a phantom of your hopes and wanting.

And if I took your hand now,

I'd only lead to fantasy.

The shallow depths that seem so pretty,

As we both drown...

And the sky remains pitch,

Over the stench of streets

That have cliamed the last of innocence.

From eyes that will never rise again...

From a heart that will never hope again...

A soul to never touch joy again...

Leaves you waiting...

Leaves you waiting...

I know you wished for more than this,

But this is all there really is...

We made our own angels...

Now we feed our own devils...

Create our own evil...

Leaves you waiting...

Leaves you waiting...

As we both drown.

Leaves you waiting as we both drown.

94. Morrissey
If the Smiths aren't depressing enough, try Morrissey's solo stuff. I was once depressed for about three weeks and couldn't figure out why. Then I realized it. I had been listening in the car to the same Morrissey CD the entire time! Just seeped into my body and brain.

Every day is like Sunday.
Every day is silent and gray.

96. Alone again, naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan
In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to whoever
What it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that's tough"
"She stood him up"
"No point in us remaining"
"We may as well go home"
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to, who wouldn't do?
The role I was about to play?
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God in His mercy
Who, if He really does exist,
Why did He desert me?
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
Broken in the world that can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

(instrumental interlude)

Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

107. Ralph McTell's "Streets of London"
Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the paper,
with his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news

So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.

Chorus

In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man is sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea last an hour
Then he wanders home alone

Chorus

And have you seen the old man
Outside the seaman's mission
Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears.
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care

Chorus

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/tomjones/greengreengrassofhome.html

snip . . . . . .
Then I awake and look around me, at four grey wall surround me
and I realize that I was only dreaming.
For there's a guard and there's a sad old padre -
arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak.
Again I touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree
as they lay me neath the green, green grass of home.
. . . . .

111. Avoid if suicidal or post breakup..."Sick of Food"...
by the American Music Club:

I'm sick of food
So why am I so hungry
I was sick of you
But I don't mind seeing your little face
I was sick of love
So I just stopped feeling
But I couldn't find anything to take its place

What'll I do with my time?

I'm sick of drink
So why am I so thirsty
I must have been born on the planet Mercury

I just called to ask you what I said last night
I just called to ask you what I did last night

So what'll I do with my time?

Now I wake up and I don't have any gravity
Now I wake up still walking in my sleep
Now I wake up feel the world drawing away from me
And now I wake up still walking in my sleep

I'm sick of food
So why am I so hungry
I'm sick of feeling the world draw away from me

And now I wake up
Yeah I remember
Feel the whole world draw away from me
Now I wake up what good is it
Another bright nothing
Another day

112. This one is...
Richard Cory

They say that richard cory owns one half of this whole town,
With political connections to spread his wealth around.
Born into society, a bankers only child,
He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life Im living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes:
Richard Cory at the opera, richard Cory at a show.
And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht!
Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life Im living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch,
And they were grateful for his patronage and thanked him very much,
So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read:
Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life Im living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

Richard Cory
Edwin Arlington Robinson. 1869–

45. Richard Corey

WHENEVER Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed, 5
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich—yes, richer than a king,
And admirably schooled in every grace: 10
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, 15
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

"When I am Laid in Earth" from Dido and Aeneas, an opera by Henry Purcell.

The words are: When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create, no trouble, no trouble in thy breast.
Remember me! Remember me! Ah, but forget my fate.

I studied voice for a couple of years, and I don't think I can get thru this one without breaking down. Maybe it's my age. I know I'm not gonna be here forever.

115. Bob Dylan.. "Ain't Talkin'"
(I think this is Dylan writing at his very best, but the song scares the shit out of me....)

As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden,
The wounded flowers were dangling from the vine,
I was passin' by yon cool crystal fountain,
Someone hit me from behind.

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Through this weary world of woe.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
No one on earth would ever know.

They say prayer has the power to heal, so pray for me, mother.
In the human heart, an evil spirit will dwell.
I am a-tryin' to love my neighbor and do good unto others,
But oh mother things ain't goin' well.

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
I'll burn that bridge before you can cross.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
There'll be no mercy for you once you've lost.

Now I'm all worn down by weeping,
My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry.
If I catch my opponents ever sleeping,
I'll just slaughter 'em where they lie.

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Through the world mysterious and vague.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' through the cities of the plague.

Well, the whole world is filled with speculation,
The whole wide world which people say is round.
They will tear your mind away from contemplation,
They will jump on your misfortune when you're down.

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Eatin' hog-eyed grease in a hog-eyed town.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Some day you'll be glad to have me around.

They will crush you with wealth and power
Every waking moment you could crack.
I'll make the most of one last extra hour,
I'll avenge my father's death when I step back.

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Hand me down my walkin' cane.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Got to get you out of my miserable brain.

All my loyal and my much-loved companions
They approve of me and share my code
I practice a faith that's been long abandoned
Ain't no altars on this long and lonesome road

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
My mule is sick, my horse is blind.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Thinkin' 'bout that gal I left behind.

Well, it's bright in the heavens and the wheels are flyin',
Fame and honor never seem to fade.
The fire gone out but the light is never dyin'.
Who says I can't get heavenly aid'

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Carryin' a dead man's seal.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' with a toothache in my heel.

The suffering is unending;
Every nook and cranny has its tears.
I'm not playing, I'm not pretending,
I'm not nursing any superfluous fears.

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Walkin' ever since the other night.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' till I'm clean out of sight.

As I walked out in the mystic garden
On a hot summer day, a hot summer lawn.
Excuse me, ma'am, I beg your pardon:
There's no one here, the gardener is gone.

Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Up the road, around the bend.
Heart burnin', still yearnin'
In the last outback at the world's end.
