Get a grip -- and keep it. That's the advice Nintendo is offering those who are using the joysticks for their new Wii video game system.
The Wii video-game console has been flying off store shelves. Now, there are reports that the new wandlike controller has been flying out of users' hands.
Some people have lost their grip on the joysticks -- causing them to fly into things like TV screens, people and in a couple of cases, nearby computers.
Nintendo's Web site has a page that features the safety precautions that come with the game system. Among other things, it reminds players to make sure they use the straps that come on the joystick -- and make sure they're secure.
It also advises against swinging the joysticks wildly, which can increase the chance of them flying into other objects.
The company's president acknowledged the recently launched Wii may have a problem with a strap that should secure the remote to the player's wrist.
Satoru Iwata said the company is looking into reports that the remote straps are falling off the new Wii controllers. Iwata told reporters in Tokyo that the company is investigating how much the problem is showing up -- and what can be done about it.
When using the Wii, players swing the remote about like a sword, baseball bat or as a boxing glove, depending on the game being played. Iwata said that "Some people are getting a lot more excited than we'd expected" -- so the company has to help people understand how to use the remotes properly.
The company has not decided on any specific measures to change the strap.
He also said Nintendo may raise its sales target for the Wii, which is selling out at retailers since it went on sale in recent weeks in the U.S. and Japan.
