Nintendo Telling Wii Users To Hold On To Controllers (Flying out of user's hands)

<snip>

Get a grip -- and keep it. That's the advice Nintendo is offering those who are using the joysticks for their new Wii video game system.

The Wii video-game console has been flying off store shelves. Now, there are reports that the new wandlike controller has been flying out of users' hands.

Some people have lost their grip on the joysticks -- causing them to fly into things like TV screens, people and in a couple of cases, nearby computers.

Nintendo's Web site has a page that features the safety precautions that come with the game system. Among other things, it reminds players to make sure they use the straps that come on the joystick -- and make sure they're secure.

It also advises against swinging the joysticks wildly, which can increase the chance of them flying into other objects.

The company's president acknowledged the recently launched Wii may have a problem with a strap that should secure the remote to the player's wrist.

Satoru Iwata said the company is looking into reports that the remote straps are falling off the new Wii controllers. Iwata told reporters in Tokyo that the company is investigating how much the problem is showing up -- and what can be done about it.

When using the Wii, players swing the remote about like a sword, baseball bat or as a boxing glove, depending on the game being played. Iwata said that "Some people are getting a lot more excited than we'd expected" -- so the company has to help people understand how to use the remotes properly.

The company has not decided on any specific measures to change the strap.

He also said Nintendo may raise its sales target for the Wii, which is selling out at retailers since it went on sale in recent weeks in the U.S. and Japan.

1. Wax it.
No, I'm not kidding.

Surfers wax their boards to improve grip, using such products as Mr. Zog's Sex Wax.

So many drummers used Mr. Zog's to keep their sticks from flying out of their hands, now you can buy Mr. Zog's Sex Wax for Drummers at music shops. Same stuff as regular Mr. Zog's, but in a smaller container.

So all you Wii users, go to your local music emporium and get a container of Mr. Zog's. Wax the controller with it (follow the instructions on the label) and you won't have any more slippage problems.

3. I just knew this was going to happen.
And it's also why I'll never get one. I toss pencils during Pictionary matches; Lord, the damage I'd do with a Wii controller.

4. This is one of the Nintendo warnings:
Even while wearing the wrist strap, make sure you don’t let go of the Wii Remote during game play and do not use excessive motion.

For example, in Wii Sports bowling, the proper way to let go of the ball while bowling is to release the “B” button on the Wii Remote — DO NOT LET GO OF THE Wii REMOTE ITSELF.

I think it's hysterical (something I would do).

Lots of broken Plasma and LCD tvs already.

6. I clobbered my wifes brother playing tennis.
One wild swing and *POP*...right in the face. Blood everywhere.

Nintendo and some other third-party companies are selling soft, rubberized sleeves for the Wii already. They are intended to color code the remotes and improve grip, but I recommend that any Wii buyers pick some up just to soften the impact when one inevitably hits something.

The WiiHaveAProblem site also has photos that illustrate another problem. Make CERTAIN that you aren't playing near any ceiling fans. I've hit mine twice without serious incident, but there is a guy on that site who smashed the light on his fan and sliced his hand badly.

11. Knew it, knew it, knew it!
The very first time I saw an ad for wii, I said to Mrs. Rat, "If people get these for Christmas, there are gonna be a bunch of broken TV screens by December 26."

Swing a small, weighted object toward your TV screen? Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

12. my kid has been playing zelda more than the sports game
so he doesn't get as wild with the controller. I did about pop my shoulder out of socket however when I was trying to swing at a pitch in baseball.
