So what should I do my next speech on?
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 08:30 PM by MoonGod
Persuasive speech.

The options I'm considering:
  • Vote for/Support Kucinich 4 Prez
  • Draft Gore
  • Oppose the Davis recall
  • Support election/ballot reform (black box voting issue)
  • Impeach Bush
  • Create a Department of Peace

I'd do this thread as a poll, but I'm honestly too poor to contribute right now. Besides, I wouldn't have access to creating polls immediately anyway and I gotta make up my mind soon :)

So... what do you guys `n' gals think?

edit to add Dept of Peace option

The message can't be said enough, plus there is a lot of information here http://www.votetoimpeach.org/ for you.

    2. Yup. It can't be said enough..

... of course, I feel the same way about all of those options. That's why I'm having a hard time choosing. :)

As far as votetoimpeach.org, our class has very strict rules about sources, and I'm 99.999% sure that one wouldn't fly. So it would only be useful to see the arguments/logic they use, but I don't really need help there. What well-informed American does? :)

    3. If you have enough time:
vote for Kucinich because the draft Gore idea just won't fly

oppose the Davis recall because the Black Box Voting mess ensures that there will be no proof of truth

There will be no chance for peace in this land unless Bush in impeached.

There - whittled it down a little - maybe you can whittle it some more?

    good luck!!!

    7. Umm... speech class...

... community college in Southern California.

If there are any Freeper-types in the class, they've kept their mouth shut to date... 'cept for one guy, but I'm not sure if he's a full-blown mindless freeper, or just conservative compared to most of the class.

Either way, I've been pretty vocal about my political views and have received nothing but positive feedback.

I did my first speech (informative) on political websites. I got quite a laugh when I put a screecap of this up on the overhead: http://bushspeaks.com/home.asp?did=40. The class also seemed rather amused when I read the DU "mission statement" and got to the part where it mentions the "illegitimate presidency of George W. Bush" or somesuch.

    8. I like the idea of the Black Box voting issue.
I find a surprising lot of people are uninformed or at least underinformed on the subject. Of all you options, I think it likely to be the one most in need of discussion.

    9. black box voting
it is something most people don't know about and can be presented in a bi-partisan manner. It is something all parties should be worried about.

    10. Okay... so far...

    2 votes for Impeach Bush
    1 vote AGAINST Impeach Bush

    2 votes for BBV.

BBV jumps out to an early lead...

    12. The need for unity among anti-Bush forces
'cause we gotta get rid of this clown, and bickering candidate vs candidate and everybody vs DLC isn't going to do it.

BBV is also a good topic for a persuasive speech class, but impeaching Bush, while a glorious idea, would only be appropriate in the context of a debate (unless your classmates happen to be the US Senate).

    13. Well... you could say the same about BBV...
... we don't have direct control over either issue. On both, the most we can do is raise heck and write our representatives.

And the "unity" issue is really only one amongst us here. Out there in the rest of the world, not everybody is a Democrat and not everybody has even heard of many of the Dem candidates, much less debates about them.

Either way... just adding my 2 cents.

My real question is: should I count this as one more vote for BBV?

    That would make the score:

    BBV: 3
    Impeach: 2 (-1)
    All others: 0

    14. No, I think it's in real life where unity is important
It doesn't matter a whit if a few of us are being nasty to each other about our respective candidates on DU. It's in real life where Democrats have to come together to bring the junta down. And it's not important only to Democrats, as they'll likely find out quickly if he manages to get re-installed.

Although it's true that black-box voting is another problem that citizen action can't directly change, it's definitely one that will only be fixed as a result of agitation. 'Cause the ass-clowns in office aren't too likely to change the system that put them in office unless there's a major stink made by the general public or the media. And you've already noted how unlikely the latter is.

Forgive gobbledy-gook; typing in my sleep. Put me down as a vote for Other.

    15. That makes the score

    BBV: 2
    Impeach: 2 (-1)
    All others: 0

(There is no "Other" category, I just didn't feel like relisting all of them and typing 0 5 times) :)
