Poll question: Sauerkraut on New Years Day: Yeah or Nay
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 02:33 PM by LynneSin
I have no clue where the tradition came from, but for some reason it's a big deal in Central Pennsylvania (where I grew up). Sauerkraut on New Years Day. Yum, Yum - nothing like pickled cabbage :eyes:

Personally, I won't touch the stuff, but my mother always cooks up a big pot of it for New Years Day (hence why I don't go to Harrisburg anymore for Jan 1st).

Anyone else a big fan of Sauerkraut and especially on New Years Day

1. what are you eating it with?
Like, a hot dog or something? Or are you just grabbing handfulls of sauerkraut and shoving them into your mouth?

5. OMG, nice mental picture
I only eat Sauerkraut on Bratwurst, but not on New Year's Day necessarily. Great, now I have this image of Magic Rat chewing mouthfulls of Saurkraut with strings bursting out of his mouth, thanks!

2. Best to start off the New Year regular without last year's shit
I'll even bet that's where it came from. I've never heard of sauerkraut on New Year's day but I would venture to guess a highly impacted German made that up.

but I agree absolutely about the scrapple.

Scrapple is not food-- it is punishment.

7. I'll tell you where the tradition came from
Sauerkraut is very efficient at replenishing the water and salt your body needs after getting fucked up on New Year's eve.

8. I thought it was prevelant too
But maybe the sauerkraut is really just a PA Dutch thing. As I've lived in other parts of the country, people look at me strange when I mentioned the New Years tradition of pork and sauerkraut.

Of course, in the shell that is Central PA, I'd never heard of people eating black eyed peas either.

19. Sauerkraut is something that you can put pork with and leave on the stove
it's easy, pork on new years is traditional. I think it is so you can cook up your kielbasa or pork and just leave it alone and party
