A sad day indeed.
I have just learned that Broadside Bay and International Booty Trap have retired from roller derby.

The great Broadside Bay with arms aloft:

The amazing International Booty Trap

I love me some High Rollers. They haven't won a bout yet, but it's always a thrill to watch them roll.

1. You know,
I'm wondering, how do people get started in that anyway? Are they pros?

2. No, it's a very DIY thing.
Grass-rootsy. They don't make any money doing it. Broadside Bay is a science teacher. The Harmacist from Guns 'n' Rollers is a pharmacist.

A lot of those dames met at the Burnside skate-park. Some of them may have even seen asthmaticeog wreck his ankle.

3. my gay punk rock friends in NYC are "obsessed" with this stuff.
some are even trying out for some male contingent team that is attached to whatever roller derby league it is in NYC. I don't pay attention to the details when they talk about it on the dicussion board i participate on. It might be something knew.

12. Mighty fine.
I'm going to get me some roller skating lessons in January. I could skate much better than now when I was 12. I was told a few months back, though, that I am "a very graceful faller."

4. I remember they used to have it on TV when I was young.
It looked pretty rough. Kinda like hockey without the puck, or the sticks, or the ice, or the protective gear.:scared:

11. Yeah, when I was ten I got addicted to the LA T-birds on TV
There wasn't much to do in Havre, Montana, so I fell in love with roller derby.

6. Oh, Burnside...
Bryan: I'm going to drop into the eye bowl.
Me: Good luck with that idiot.
Me: Can you see the bottom?
Bryan: No.
Bryan: I landed on a needle.
Bryan: I think homeless people live down here.
Bryan: I'm not sure how to get out of this thing.

17. 3000 people attended the championship bout, paying $15/ticket
$1 of which was alleged to have gone to a good cause.

Skaters range in age from 21 to mid-forties.

I'll bore you with more details when I have had some sleep.

23. those flat numbers may not indicate a shit pile of money, but they...
indicate a chunk; i've been a part of promoting rock concerts but it's not dissimilar; and so i realize there are costs for insur, security, the venue, concessions, etc...plus everybody likes to make money maybe especially promoters but still; skaters need to be compensated for laying their shit on the line that's my thought,

a championship skate should be worth $750 per skater easily + freebies & perks and i'm not trying to insult anyone, but sadly the 'take' minus the overhead doesn't leave a lot left on the table
