The former-Floridians in question use different words for the square kind.

8. When I checked google image search
for Topflappen it told me we call the glove Grillhandschuh (bbq glove) or also Ofenhandschuh (oven mitt)

So I thought, "Gee, maybe that came from a German word that got translated into English literally."
