3. I think you are right unless it is an accident.
Edited on Wed Nov-29-06 08:45 PM by BarenakedLady
If you have a disease that is killing you of course.

If you are depressed enough to end your own life, the same is true.

Accident? Then no. Unless you mean for that split second...

Ok, way too deep for my state of mind atm.

But in most cases I think you're right.

18. You may never be quite as sick,
but it doesn't necessarily follow that you are at the greatest point of suffering just before you die. Emotionally and even physically there is often a respite - a time of peace - so says my father, a physician. I think in the case of long-term illness the sense of sickness is compounded by fear and the realization that there will be no end until the end. That must be the most terrible, even for the most brave.

50. I Would Attest To That
I watched my mother fight ovarian cancer for 5 years. When she finally succumbed, it was probably more to the treatments than the disease, but the disease was always there, always present, always waiting to devour her. It terrified her. I never had thought of her as brave before she had that to deal with, but she fought and fought when many (perhaps myself included) would have easily given up. Maybe she had a false hope that there would be a cure down the road if she could just hang on. She said as much, but knowing what I knew about ovarian cancer at the stage hers was found, it was a damned miracle to have survived a third of the time she did.

But in the end, she was peaceful in a way that was not just strong drugs. She was a little out of it, but that was okay too. I said in another thread that she mentioned that I and my sister, should read "The Kite Runner", without explanation. We just looked at each other. I have yet to read it, but it is on my to do list because she told me to.

31. My father had a different twist...
He was in the Navy and had an awful problem with seasickness. So he learned to console himself with the thought that if he got any sicker he would die. He found some kind of bizarre comfort in that... enough to re-tell the story anyway...

45. Funny part is
though he's 3/4 Irish like me (my mother is 3/4 too) he has always identified with the little bit of English in our lineage. He's a military, bible thumping republican which makes sense when you parallel the English Imperial philosophy with our current administration. But this is the lounge and it's about fun not politics so I will go no further.

You are right though, my dad can tell an excellent story no matter how hard he tries to deny his lineage. He and my mother never caught the Irish Virus though; Thank God, Mother Mary and all the Saints above!!!! They were volatile enough!

I know people who were horribly ill, recovered, then had some stupid ass thing like a car accident take them out.

On the other hand, I know people who were the picture of health until a final nasty illness.

Such is life.

53. If you're murdered
then in the instant before you die you'll probably feel sicker than you ever have before, realizing that you're about to die. But then again, maybe you won't. It's possible that someone, realizing that they're about to get killed, wouldn't even care, but isn't that itself an indication of mental sickness?

59. Well, I just got over the sickest I've felt in a long time.
Three days!

I was vomiting (eight times in day one) and dizzy, a 103 fever, shaking, freezing, body aches. I felt like I was just going to die. I passed out in front of the toilet after vomiting. On the phone, my mother was a bit worried because I sounded so out of it. My sleep was restless because I kept waking myself up calling out or moaning. I was one degree away (104) from going to the hospital.

Finally, today, I was able to eat on not throw it back up. I'm sitting up and feeling a bit better. I am still a bit dizzy, have a headache and some body aching.
