So tell me, what's your position on DU?
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 09:40 PM by Redstone
I mean, where and how are you usually positioned when hanging out and posting on DU?

Me:

When it's above 45 degrees: Out on the screen porch, sitting in an IKEA springy chair (with extra padding borrowed from another chair), feet up on one of those cheap molded resin tables, pillow under my left elbow (that's vital), Powerbook in lap, said Powerbook on an old "My First Dictionary" kids' book to keep the computer (and my groin, if you don't mind me mentioning said anatomy) from geting too hot.

Below 45 degrees: In my outer office, on the couch with the built-in recliner reclined, so no table for the feet needed, but the rest as above.

You?

I'm wired up but have arranged it so that I can move from my desk, to my chaise, to my sofa if I want to look out the front window. In my next house I'm going wireless, and have already arranged with a friend who will set it up for me. Because I want to be able to lie in bed and DU, if that's the mood I'm in.

15. A few years ago, the zoo where I am kept installed a little habitat
where I could squirrel away on very hot days. It was hoped that I would breed with others of my species - even though that has proved problematic as the zoo cannot determine what species exactly, I am. But extremely ugly animals are popular at zoos, at least zoos in the United States, because part of the zoo going experience includes tours by 5th grade classes where girls who are already wearing too much make up are encouraged to whine "ewwwwww.........what's that?" Thus I generate a certain amount of interest at the zoo, and I am indulged.

Anyway, they installed this little habitat, and one night, when all the caretakers were either drunk or stoned or at home, I broke into the zoo Director's office and stole his laptop. Now huddled furtively in my little private habitat, using it, I type messages here on DU.

20. No. They like it when I sit there with my tongue hanging out panting.
Also the air conditioning tends to keep the bugs from breeding as fast as they would otherwise.

It's a great show for the crowds when I have to pick at the bugs crawling all over me.

26. I am on my boat in the Florida Keys.
I sit on a couch looking out at the Florida Bay to the west, normally looking at the sunset. Usually my sliding glass door is open, and I am looking out at the bay and some mangrove islands. During hurricanes, the door is closed. Tonight the door is closed because we are getting unseasonably cold weather. Dropping down to the fourties tonight, says the weather guy. You'all on the mainland can laugh at this, since it probably won't go below forty degrees here. But try sitting on a boat in the harbor when a nor'easter is blowing in and the foam is covering the windows...It gets pretty darned cold. Fortunately, I have my penguin jammies and my bottle of rum. Rum = Island cure for everything.

33. Yes, I'm jealous. No, I'm not. I'm happy that you can have that kind of life.
And I hope you're enjoying the hell out of it. (Zero sarcasm there.)

I'll bet you hear many people expressing jealousy of the way you live, and they NEVER realize that they could do the same, if they'd just let go (as you obviously have learned to).

A lesson for all of us: My initial reaction was "damn, what a way to live," and then I thought for a moment and realized that if I REALLY wanted to live that way, I could sell everything and just go do it instead of being jealous.

What a stupid reaction on my part.

And on the part of everyone who reacts to your post with jealousy.

50. It's not that unusual down here.
The price of housing is off the charts, and most people who live and work down here have to find alternative housing. Either you commute from the mainland, live in a trailer (very few left in Key Largo) or live on a boat. Our boat is in a live-aboard marina. It is a large boat with all the comforts, which we require since we both work full time. We just happen to love the water, so this is the best choice for us, going on twenty five years now. If we loved the mountains or the desert, we'd try to figure out some way to do that. But at the same time, we had our home years ago when we lived on the mainland and were raising a family, so it's not like we didn't have those experiences as well.

Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 11:05 PM by qnr
The apartment is tiny, period, and the front door opens to the sidewalk of main street.

However, it actually works in my favor, because I'm normally working on five or six different things*. The lack of comfort keeps me active, and ensures that I get up and walk around/take a break frequently.

* For example, at the moment, I'm typing on DU, doing some coding work for the distro I work on, scanning some things, and turning the scanned items into an ebook.

I'm in the position that I'm always in: Here at my computer table, in my big upstairs study...

It's a generous room, about 440 square feet, and it's all mine...

I have two tables at right angles to each other; one has the computer and printer, and the other has the phone, my books and other assorted papers etc....

It has been the scene for many laughs, some tears, much joy...

This spot is my favorite one in this whole house........I live here...
