My uncle took his life last night
I just spoke to the police who told me he laid down in front of a passenger train last night.

4. thank you
I feel badly for the poor train engineer who tried in vain to stop the train. I feel badly for the passengers also. That he had alcohol problems and was living in the streets leads me to think that his death was a forgone conclusion. I feel badly that he couldn't overcome his demons and get sober. I feel very bad for my Mom who has lost 2 siblings this year.

It is inconceivable to me that someone could just lay there as a train approaches.

Suicide can be very difficult for those left behind. Hopefully no one in your family is blaming themselves, its not their fault.

12. I understand
Unfortunately we now have to withhold that he committed suicide from her. He was living at her house until a few years ago but his drinking and violence made it necessary to have him leave. I just know she would blame herself if she knew.

17. May I make a suggestion? It may be hard for you to think of this right now, but
I think it might be a good thing for you and / or your family to reach out to the crew of that train.

This is going to haunt them forever, and it's not their fault.

Just a suggestion.

into a wall, for a long time.

And I am so sorry for you and your loved ones. I feel a special sense of grief for those who survive a death like this one.

Your family member must NOT assume they "could have done something to stop him"
It is no one's fault
I am of the conviction that once a person reaches the point that they think death is the only option and they no longer want to live, there is no sanity left in their mind or heart.

Suicide has been defined as a permanent solution to an often temporary problem.

Your family is in shock now, but do search about for a Survivors of Suicide group.
It will be helpful to all of you. You will need to do it when you are ready but I highly recommend it.

My mom and I joined one about 3 years after my dad died. It was very helpful for both of us.

Check w/ your local mental health association or call the local hotline and they may know.
