What's the most popular sports team in your state (college or pro)??
In North Dakota, it would have to be NDSU Bison Football, as evidenced on Saturday with a record attendance of 19,053 at the Fargodome to see the Bison play South Dakota State for the Dakota Marker trophy and the Great West Football Conference championship.

UND Sioux hockey is a close second, with the largest total season attendance every year in North Dakota. But Bison football averages a lot more fans per game than UND hockey, and is generally seen as a bigger event by most people.

Minnesota: The Vikings. For now, and forever till the end. Even though they seem to piss everyone off all the time (including this season), it doesn't matter how bad they do, you can guarantee that 70 percent of all television sets in the state of Minnesota will be tuned into the Vikings game during the three hours that they play every Sunday.

What about your state??

29. Steagles?
Edited on Mon Nov-20-06 04:44 PM by Ravenseye
Actually since for a breif period they were one team can we just say the "Steagles" and call it a truce?

I think while the Steelers have more supporters nationwide than the Eagles, the Eagles win in the state findings.

http://www.issuespa.net/polls/point/11871/11881

37% Eagles, 35% Steelers, 4% Other

However it is more "a part of the social fabric" in western pennsylvania. 84% of people in Southwest PA are Steelers fans, but only 68% of people in Southeast PA are Eagles fans.

The Steelers cover a wider area though, all of Western PA is decidedly black and gold, the central part of the state is split down the middle and even Northeast PA has a large Steelers minority even so close to Philly.

Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 10:20 AM by Patiod
Eagles and Phils fandom goes only north to Allentown and west to Reading - people in the rest of the state tend to resent Philadelphia and be fans of the Steelers or some other team (like the Nittany Lions)

When the Phils were playing in the world series, I could tell when the Astros or KC had a hit, because a huge cheer would go up around campus at Penn State. Everyone but the Philadelphians were actively rooting against us. Same thing didn't happen the previous year when the Pirates played.

Felt pretty good when we won though, and the Philadelphians were dancing in the streets

/yes, I'm that old

I would guess the Diamondbacks because they won the WS in 2001 and no other team in the state has won (or will win) a championship.

I hope the Dawgs beat the Yellowjackets like a drum! The game is being played in Athens this year. There's nothing like the sound of 90,000 rabid football fans in Sanford stadium. The sound of tens of thousands of fans cheering on the Dawgs is tremendous. I can hear the crowd noise at my house which is several miles from the stadium! Awesome!

Goooooooooooooooooooooooo Dawgs! Sic 'em! Woof, woof, woof! :woohoo:

As far as professional sports are concerned, the Braves, Hawks and Falcons are all very popular.

23. In Mississippi it isn't schools or teams from Mississippi
There are as many LSU fans in MS as there are for any in-state schools. And the New Orleans Saints are the pro team of choice. The Packers are big favorites in MS but thats because of Bret Favre, the state's current biggest star.

37. It totally depends
on what part of the state you're in.

Here in LA, it's all about the Lakers, the Dodgers, USC football, and UCLA basketball. But the people up in the Bay area would beg to differ. San Diego wouldn't agree either.

Timeline
2000's - Colts
Late 90's - Pacers/Colts tie
Mid 90's - Pacers
Prett much Early 90's back till the late 70's - Indiana Hoosiers Basketball, sad thing about this is when I was very young kid (4-5 years old) I thought IU was on the same level as the Lakers and Celtics, I first remember hearing about the pacers when a player visited my school like in first grade and I'm like who are they and I live in Indianapolis!

as far as college, you'll find people who swear by the Miami Hurricanes, the Florida State Seminoles and the FLORIDA GATORS!! (WOO!!! GO GATORS!!!!). Ahem. I won't say which of these I support.

As far as pro teams, I guess there's a lot of Miami Heat fans, since they're the reigning champs. But I think most people follow college ball a bit more closely.
