Would A Vacuum Cleaner Be A Bad Christmas Gift For My Parents?
I mean, a really nice one?

Does anyone have a really good one they could recommend?

1. If they want a vaccuum cleaner I think it is a good idea.
My sister just got one of those Dyson ones and loves it. I am going to get one of those eventually, too, because I am tired of the filters and bags and crap.

They are expensive, but apparently worth every penny.

3. If they need one, it could be.
Oreck (spelling?) ones are pretty light and powerful. My parents have one and it's light enough to easily haul up and down stairs.

Kirby vacuum cleaners last forever.

6. But to be serious:
If they need it, and you get a high quality one, it won't suck.

7. Dyson

No bag, no filter to clean, and those who have one tell me it's the best vacuum they've ever had. It's also not horribly loud.

If you do get them a vacuum cleaner, maybe temper it with a special Christmas decoration that can be displayed over the following years, such as an engraved ornament or a small wreath, or maybe a year's gift subscription to a magazine.

8. I'll second this suggestion
I never like giving utilitarian gifts without something fun to temper it.

13. Roomba
Get them a roomba from irobot. I have one and love it. I'm thinking about getting one for my parents for Christmas. They're getting older (not that old but getting there) and I can't see buying my mother (she does the vacuuming) a heavy stand up vacuum when what she needs is a solution to make her life easy.

Roomba does it for you.

17. Roombas are a good gift. Very entertaining.
I would highly suggest considering the behaviors of any animal members of the household, however. My dogs attacked my roomba. Although a pack of one-foot tall terriers attacking a robot was very entertaining, I had to give the roomba to my sister.

15. Maybe OK for parents. Bad choice for wife.
It was many years ago, in the infancy of our marriage.
I gave her a vacuum cleaner.
Miz t. thinks it was for anniversary, but I don't think even I was that dumb back then.
I think it was for birthday or maybe Mothers' Day.
In any event, I still have the scars.
;-)

16. Wife & I bought a vacuum cleaner for our 1st anniversary.
We've never forgotten what we gave each other and still laugh about it.

21. I heard of a couple who gave each other a snow tire for the car on the 1st anniversary.
They were both students and money was tight. I think it was kind of charming. Makes a great story to tell the kids and grandchildren.

20. A vacuum cleaner is a fine gift as long as it is not for a wife or girlfriend.
In that case you will probably end up wearing it while on your ass in the yard with all of your belongings scattered around, and rightly so.
