Has anyone ever had Lasik surgery?
Was it expensive?

How long did it take to see normally?

Do you have to have repeat surgery later?

I only have to wear glasses when I read. But I'm having to get a new perscription and new glasses every two years. I'm starting to wonder if it'd just be better to go ahead and have the surgery.

Any advice is appreciated.

:)

1. I went with my friend when she had it done.
She had complications because of her epithelial layer on her eye is really loose. Her vision still isn't all the way right and she had it about a year ago. She had to do one eye at a time because of her condition, and then she had to get one eye tweaked. She had a hard time with pain. It lasted about a week. But that said, I have had friends do it and everything be fine the next day. They do give mephergan (sp?)for pain.

6. Normally...
BEFORE surgery, you go through Pre-op testing.

One of the tests that is done is a Pachimetry test, this measures the thickness of your cornea.

They also should have looked at her cell layer.

It pisses me off when surgeons do this kinda crap, it really screws the integrity of this type of surgery. :(

8. She did do the pre-op stuff, but I guess they didn't look at her cell layer.
And here she thought she was going to the top doc in the state!!!

11. Sometimes money displaces
integrity... :(

Ofcourse, not knowing exactly what happened with her... it is possible for things to go wrong in any surgical procedure.

2. Howdy Miss Maddy!!!
:)

The lasik surgery for now only fixes distance vision. The only way out of that is to do what they call Mono-vision, it's one eye for distance, one eye for near. You really needed to have worn contacts like this to see if it works for you.

There is a new procedure out there now, it is called " crystal lens" You can read more about it here:

http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=1524697

Of course, it is MUCH more expensive, about 5,000 an eye. :(

I see the price going down in a few years.

9. I had Lasik about 3 years ago.
Best thing I ever did! I'd worn contacts since 6th grade...trying to stop the progression of nearsightedness. I couldn't see 5 inches without contacts and my eyes were so bad I couldn't wear soft lenses.
I had to go without my contacts for about two months before the surgery to allow my eyes to return to their normal shape.
The surgery was over in about 5 minutes...no pain. Afterwards it felt like I had been chopping onions...but that didn't last long. I sat up from the operating table and could read the clock across the room...amazing.

I have to wear reading glasses (I was using them with my contact before the surgery). I haven't had any problems.

14. There's nothing like
being able to see when you get out of bed in the morning. The downside is...there is a wall of mirrors outside my shower with a glass door. Yikes! I couldn't see things that clearly before!!

13. Great success story!
I am an RN for a rather large lasik surgery center. I LOVE hearing these types of stories.

It is so emotional to have a patient get off the surgie table and look across the room to see the clock... It almost makes me cry everytime.

I am so happy that it worked well for you!

I never thought I'd be without contacts or glasses. The freedom is amazing!

16. About 5 years ago
My vision was on the extreme end of nearsighted, with a little asthigmatism in one eye. I can't say anything about cost because my health insurance covered it 100 percent. I was at work the next day, and within about a week after the surgery, my vision was at 20-25. I didn't require any sort of followup surgery and had no problems afterward. You'll hear people talk about haloing, and I do have some of that, but quite frankly I had haloing before the surgery that was even worse.

20. My brother went from nearsighted to farsighted
He's happy with the results, but still has to wear prescription lenses. He goes back about once a month (the price included follow-up visits) but they can't correct what they've done. I'm shocked by the imprecision of the procedure ... and why they didn't choose a more conservative course. For $3,000, you'd think they'd be more careful.

But he has no other side affects - and no regrets.
