Mad Max II: The Road Warrior = Brilliant.
Despite what is possibly the worst orchestral score in the history of cinema, The Road Warrior is a really, really good movie.

I'm watching it now for the umpteenth time, but the first time in large-letterbox aspect ratio.

The cinematography and stunt-coordination is excellent, the director (George Miller)'s coverage is flawless, and the interpersonal subtleties between the characters (yes, there is some subtlety) is quite developed. Plus, the story is really well-written. The dialogue is susinct yet manages to convey both complex and simple information. The characters are entertaining (particularly the Joe Strummer-On-Steroids henchman to the Humongous, Wez).

Plus, did anybody say "allegory"? Civilization vs savagry fighting over the remaining gasoline on the planet.... Hmmm....

Fucking great movie, that.

1. Road Warrior is the best of the trilogy, for sure!
Great film. Really great film - I agree with you wholeheartedly. That one contains some real artistry in the cinematography, acting, and directing.

I haven't watched it in years - I need to buy a DVD of it some day.

2. Yeah, it was on Bravo last night....
I recently bought a 37" TV, so I needed a good movie to "try it out". That was the perfect movie!

3. I liked Bruce Spence, the Gyro Captain
Throw away moment, but a lot of meaning. After he finishes the remains of the can of dog food, he carefully pats and wipes his mouth with his handkerchief. Nice touch, he's still a civilized man.

8. That was always one of my favorite moments in the film.
Another thing I appreciated was the fact that, as violent as the film is, a lot of the violent acts were kept offscreen and referred to by reactions shots and so on. Good film-making.

10. Yes
Also nicely paced with quite, thoughtful moments. I like it when a film credits the viewer with a triple digit IQ.

4. "What a puny plan."
That line by the Humongous is right up there, perhaps no. 1, of my favorite movie lines to say in real life.

5. It *is* a great line....
So is the exchange between Papagalos and the (paralysed) mechanic when they discuss what the tanker needs repaired.

13. Have you ever heard the original voice of The Humongous?
It was Mike Tysonesque before Mike Tyson was Tyson...

6. I've seen it maybe a million times, several of those in the theatre.
I just can't figure out how the whole stunt team wasn't killed.

And you know, the score's grown on me. It's weird and hilariously bombastic, but at this point I can't conceive of a more appropriate one.

7. IMHO Beyond Thunderdome is better
Post-apocalyptic methane-based civilization with a lust for blood sport, with a tribe of children reciting an skewed mythology based on pre-apocalyptic toys and other items. That one was written and directed by some very clever people.

I'd like to see what someone talented could do with "A Canticle for Liebowitz" someday.
