WooHoo! Cops woke me up at 3am and guess what!
I get to buy a new mailbox! That's about where I am, that getting a new mailbox is exciting.

Actually....

The woke me up to tell me that someone had hit our mailboxes and demolished them. Indeed. They were strewn all over the street and the cement holding them in the ground was tossed about 15 feet. Either the driver fell asleep at the wheel or had too much to drink.

We'll have a neighborhood mailbox planting tomorrow afternoon for the 4 of us that need to replace them. The guy next door coordinates all this stuff -- suggests what we buy and then he gets the Kwik-Crete and does most of the work. He's awesome!

That will be the exciting part of my weekend -- I plan to snuggle up with my dog and a good book all weekend.

1. Here's a weird coincidence...
Just a couple of hours ago I was reading one those "my horrible confession" stories in a magazine, where a guy admitted to driving carelessly while arguing with his girlfriend and....hitting a bunch of mailboxes.

2. I think there's a full moon coming or something...
Or maybe it's a "sign" that dems will kick butt on Tuesday.

3. Instant mailbox
I don't know if they are permitted in your neighborhood, but Lowes sells a mailbox that you simply drive into the ground It's about 25 dollars all told.

4. I'll check that out..
I don't have an HOA so I can do anything I want. One of the neighbors has a mailbox in the shape of a wide mouth bass. Very funny. I'd like to get one in the shape of a weiner dog but I'm afraid it would get jacked.

5. Yeah, but they snap off like toothpicks.
I myself prefer a mailbox that causes THOU$AND$ in damage
to a vehicle's suspension and undercarriage.

8. truck stopper/ bat breaker
Some folks around here buy the instant mailbox (like I have) and then do a creative bricking up job around it. I am amazed at how much some people will spend on a mailbox. Those really big dolphin or manatee mailboxes cost something like four hundred dollars. I don't get anthing in the mail that deserves a $400 box. IN fact, when I build my new house this winter, I am not going to have a mailbox unless there is a law saying that I must.

9. That's a good idea...
I'm going to buy a cheap one. I have all my financial stuff sent to a post office box for security. Our mailboxes aren't locked and I want to avoid an identity theft hassle. It happened to my mom and sister -- what a pain in the butt!

10. I knew an artist who sold quite a few $400 boxes....
They were 1/4" plate steel, and built to look EXACTLY
like ordinary sheet-aluminum mailboxes.

He sold them to folks who had had their mailboxes bashed
by drunken fratboys.
People who paid $400 just on the off-chance
that the same drunken fratboys would come back,
leaning out the same car window with the same bat at 35mph...
and break every bone in their hands the second time around.

6. Ah, a dog and a good book

7. Love it!
Thanks for the reminder of a classic.

For some reason, I thought of this:

"Beer is a sign that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Ben Franklin

(One of my students was talking about BF the other day and a couple others started quoting him and talking about him. I wanted to say this one but it's high school -- can't encourage them to drink.)

11. I have the Ben quote on a tee shirt.
Maybe you could get away with it that way.

12. How can you be a catshrink and teach high school
simultaneously? It is an all girl's school? :)

Kidding.

Good luck with the neighborhood planting of the mailboxes.

Sounds like a warm and tranquil weekend.
