I always knew it was true!

Of course, Michigan has it's own monster in Lake Michigan...

Lake Michigan monster

Simon Otto, of Petoskey, retells stories told to him years ago by local Indian elders of a monster being seen in Lake Michigan off of Petoskey around the turn of the century.

The monster, called the underwater sea panther, had been spotted in Lake Michigan, off of Cross Village, off of Harbor Springs and off of Northport and in Torch Lake.

Even Otto's grandfather reportedly saw it near the water when he was a lumberman near Manistee. Otto's grandfather called it the big snake that lived in the woods.

The animal was called the sea panther by local Indians because its head looks like a cat's, with the body of a large lizard and spikes down its back.

1. Did you ever see "Incident at Loch Ness"?
One of the funniest friggin movies ever. Who knew Werner Herzog could be so goofy, the DVD also has the best commentary track ever where Herzog and Director Zak Penn get into a near fistfight.

I watched it three times in a row because I missed half of it the first time from gut busting fits of teary eyed laughter, and the second time because most of the stuff I missed laughing the first time sent me over the edge the second time. It's ESPECIALLY funny if you know of Herzog's drive to complete almost impossible films, his relationship with Klaus Kinski, and the almost tangible seriousness of his film catalog.

Some choice quotes -

Zak Penn: When I look back, and I hear people talk about what suffering, I say to myself, "Who suffered more than I did"? I mean, other than the people who died. I mean, obviously, they suffered more because, well, they're dead. But, you could make the argument that they're dead, so they're not really dealing with it, whereas I live with the guilt, and I live with the sadness.

Zak Penn: At least we're not dragging the boat over a hill...
Werner Herzog: What was that?
Zak Penn: Uh... nothing.

Kitana Baker: Zak, why exactly am I wearing a g-string bikini?
Zak Penn: Because you are a model and you're a sonar operator.

2. Was it that funny because
it was supposed to be funny or because it was just so bad it was funny?

5. When I hear about movies like that,
I always think of "Evil Dead 2" where that guy has a fight with his own possessed hand. Sooo funny.

6. background on the background
The castle was destroyed by the english in the civil war jacobite rebellion,
and the ruin is a sign of what empires do to conquoreds, all for the
new empire of a truck and its destructive imperio-petrolculture.

That is to say, that likely, were the original constructors of that castle
still in charge, they would possibly not be pleased to support a car commercial
on their ground. I had a good laugh in a pub the other day when a woman tourist
commented that scottish people were so easy to understand, as everyone in authority
spoke such english english. This drew a good chuckle from the scots present, the
term 'bloody english' was mumbled in to a pint, a pause... then back to drinking.
