I'm becoming a major Nerd of the Rings
Enjoyed "Fellowship", bought the huge volume containing all three books, never read it -- Tolkien's style was just too dry.

Really liked "Two Towers", tried picking up the book again, still couldn't get into it.

Saw "Return of the King", and everything clicked. All the hanging threads were resolved, all the scenes before now had meaning.

Now I've picked the book back up and am actually enjoying it. The films alone (especially the extended versions) are such a tapestry, reading the books makes the story all the richer.

It's official - I am doomed to a life of playing Magic:The Gathering at my local comic book shoppe, never to get laid again. I blame that Dungeons & Dragons craze when I was a kid -- it's come back to haunt me, turn me into a nerd, and ruin my sex life.

;)

1. Funny you should mention this
I just got done watching the second one today. Me and my brother-in-law are going to see the third one next week.

I like them alright. I can't say that I'm a big fan though. I have just enough interest to want to know how it all ends up.

Good luck with your new found nerdom. Next thing you know you'll be into all things star trek.

2. Join the club
although I first read the books many years ago and have since read them again and again and .... I really found his storytelling style fascinating. He's a little brief at times when I want him to elaborate and also elaborates at times when I want it short but overall still A+ work.

The films, I love'em. Jackson did a terrific job, dont care what anyone else thinks.

4. Good to hear
My brother is a major Tolkien fanatic and did not like the movies because they did not follow the plot lines of the book closely enough. I also am a big fan of the books (read them 30+ times), but I also enjoyed the movies quite a lot. I told him last year at Xmas that the LOTR movie trilogy would be a success if it got people to read the books. I am glad this happened in your case. Welcome to Middle Earth! (and for the record this Tolkien fan has never played Dungeons and Dragons or any other role playing game and never intends to) Of course,if you want to be a hard core Tolkien fan, you can always join the Tolkien Society:

Also got the 3-in-1 volume, and started it Monday night. I'm on page 700 already, about to start the 3rd book! I'm such a dork...
