I came to work not knowing it's a holiday
Boy do I feel stupid. I got to work this morning and couldn't figure out why I was (still am) the only one here. I even had to turn on the lights. I finally figured out that federal employees have gotten the Friday after Christmas off (when it's on a Thursday) ever since 1952.

Oh well, at least it's quiet. Question is: should I stay and keep working or leave and go shopping? It's about 11:30 here in Seattle and I'm right downtown by all the shops.

1. If you have to ask
you should probably keep working.

2. GO SHOPPING!!!!
Edited on Fri Dec-26-03 02:29 PM by Lisa0825
Initially, my office was only scheduled to have Christmas Day off. Then they sent out an email last Friday, stating that the board voted to give us Friday and have a day on Christmas Eve. I guess this is to make us feel more grateful for their kindness?LOL

3. Only since 1952?
Well, don't feel bad. Who's to say it would be the same again this year? ;)

My advice, get some work done, take advantage of the quiet. Plus, you can casually let it drop that you did so on Monday. :D

4. SHOP
Are you kidding? You give enough of yourself for the rest of the year to your job. Take this holiday with thanks and go do something fun for YOU! Like, buy stuff. What are you, a traitor? Don't you know if you DON'T shop, the terrarists win?

:)

Have fun...

9. Agree, and shopping is not really my idea of fun
I think I'll work until noon, go to my gym across the street and work out, then go have a cold beer.

Thanks for the advice!

5. Neither
Go find some non-consumerist pastime. Go see the children play in the park, go to the public library, whatever.

7. Better Idea
If you have a dog...take your dog to the park. If not, then, if you city, like mine, has free dog parks, go to one and hang with the dogs. See, when a dog comes up to you, and you pet that dog...for that moment, it's your dog! Dogs are wonderful.

Besides, no one looks at you cross-eyed if you go to a dog park, and don't actually have a dog. But, if you go to a park to watch children, and you don't have a child there, people tend to thunk the worst of you. Sad commentary on today's society, but it's the truth.

So go to the park. Hang with the dogs. They love unconditionally, unlike most people. Besides...dogs have such a great way of interaction...they lick the people they like...and bite the ones they don't! :P

11. I wish I had a dog park near me. The closest one if 50 miles away.
I went to Florida year before last to visit my daughter and her family. They live in Hollywood and we went to a dog park in Ft. Lauderdale. We took her 3 dogs and my 1 dog. Those dogs had a real blast. It was appropriately named Bark Park.

10. Totally understand. Almost did the same thing
I had Xmas day and today off, plus I am taking vacation time. I said goodbye to my boss Wednesday and told him I'd see him on Jan. 2. He said well, you are going to be in the office all by yourself. I forgot that we had Jan. 2 off. Boy, did I feel foolish!! I would have shown up at work and been the only one there.

12. screw shopping AND work!
There must be a third way, but being around all those nutcases at Westlake, and being at work on a day off... enjoy the 4 day weekend!

Dammit.

14. Of course you showed up!!!
sierra_moon, you are a very conscientious worker!

The Bon is having a great sale today, the downtown store is one of the best.

Have some relaxing fun, you've earned it. And thanks for your hard work every other day--well actually including today--on behalf of all of us.

(We actually had a wee bit of snow yesterday evening up here in Marysville!)

15. Thanks, Jax
I did actually work at home yesterday (Christmas).
However, I left work today at noon, bought a couple of gifts at the Bon, then had two yes TWO martinis at the Mayflower Hotel bar.

Grabbed the bus home and now am sitting here happy with my cat....

thanks to everyone for suggestions....I still can't believe I showed up for work today not knowing Bush had given me the day off. There is definite irony in that.
