Can anyone recommend (or discourage) a Mexican vacation spot?
Trying to plan a weekend get-away for November. I read that Cancun and Cozumel were hit directly by hurricanes last year -- white sand washed away. Other reports say 'everything is fine now.'

On the Pacific side Puerto Vallarta seems attractive but I have no clue.

1. Puerto Vallarta is great
Has a lot to do, but lots of quiet get-a-way places too.

I love Cozumel but if you're going for more than a few days and like to being stuff all the time, you'll have more to do in Puerto Vallarta.

If you like a quiet place to just relax and do nothing Cozumel is a good choice too.

2. Was just in Cozumel on Thursday....it's not the same.
When I first went, about 15 years ago, it was a laid-back and lovely little place. Very kind people..sleepy fishing village type thing. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

Now...it's ruined. They built a hard dock for the cruise ships and the town has exploded. Built some generic and hideous shopping malls. The local vendors are MUCH more aggressive. A simple "no-thank you" doesn't seem to work anymore.

We were just heartsick about it. I can't recommend it.

I really liked Zihuatenejo. Was there 3 years ago and it was beautiful and hot. Very excellent local cuisines as well.

3. It's been a while, but we had a nice stay in Puerto Vallarta at
La Jolla De Mismaloya. It's on the site where Night of the Iguana was filmed :-).

You can walk up to where The Predator was filmed too. Take a bus for cheap into Puerto Vallarta (10 miles away?).

We camped on the beach in Mulege (on the Baja Peninsula). You would have to fly into Tijuana, rent a car and drive down there I think.

It depends what you like to do......we had a great time on both trips. One was at the resort (La Jolla de Mismaloya) and the other was definitely primitive camping.

You can take a canoe ride to Yelapa, a fishing village only accessable by boat. Or takea jungle ride in a VW van along a mountain road,no guardrails, to "Chico's Hideaway", an outdoor restaurant in the middle of the jungle. The menu is a large platter with fresh fish and shellfish that you can pick and choose from. Dont make any plans from 12:00 noon to 2PM. Its "siesta time", and they shut down everything. There are natural waterfalls all around the Hideaway too. Just beautiful.
I went there for my honeymoon in 1981 and it was well worth it.
