Because it sure isn't geography or vegetable studies (?).
I'm at a Farm Fresh grocery store here in VA Beach this afternoon. I go in to pick up a pork roast, some white asparagus, proscuitto, and a good pilsner.
So, I grab a 12-pack of Pilsner Urquell and the other stuff and head for the checkout counter.
At the checkout counter, the checker asks: "Ooh! What kind of beer is this?"
I respond: "It's from the Czech Republic"
Her: "Where's that"
Me: "It used to be called Czechoslovakia"
Her: "I don't know where that is"
Me: "Prague?" <-I actually shrugged at that point
Her: "You're talking to the wrong person."
Me: "Do you know where Germany is?"
Her: "Yeah! My boyfriend's BMW is from Germany, I think."
Me: "Nah, they're made in Australia."
Her: "Oh, yeah...I think you're right."
Then she grabs my asparagus, swipes it across the reader, and the price doesn't come up.
Her: "Can I get a manager on checkout 2?"
Manager: "What's going on?"
Her: "What are these?"
Manager: "Asparagus. PLU ####"
Her: "But, they're white."
I actually walked out of that store dumber than when I walked in.
