English food BANNED in English schools
Five months after the celebrity chef Jamie Oliver (Naked Chef)succeeded in cajoling, threatening and shaming the British government into banning junk food from its school cafeterias, many schools are learning that you can lead a child to a healthy lunch, but you can’t make him eat.
...
“It’s rubbish,” said Andreas Petrou, an 11th grader. Instead, en route to school recently, he was enjoying a north of England specialty known as a chip butty: a French-fries-and-butter sandwich doused in vinegar.

The monsters that run the English school system have tried to force students to eat: "haddock provençal, beef curry and navarin of lamb" -- food that has color, taste and even spices. And many English students are frightened by food which engages the senses, includes colors other than pasty white, is not deep-fried and is not mushy.

But here in Rotherham, Andreas Petrou insists that no amount of explaining will convince him that a French fry sandwich is not a decent meal. If confronted with the school food, he said, he will do what all his friends do: gather as much bread as he can, “put half an inch of butter on each slice,” and call it lunch.

3. So help me god, that sounds good right about now!
Well, the fries and vinegar part does, anyway. I have to go to a dinner meeting and won't be eating for at least another hour and I am starving!

I wouldn't recommend eating more than one a year though.

5. Yeah, the fat content is the scary part.
Good Lord, deep fried carbs slathered with butter and vinegar then wrapped in more carbs. The vinegar is the healthiest part of the sandwich.

25. Didn't you know
All Americans have excellent diets - they make sure that they have a perfect balance of all food-groups, never eat anything that isn't fresh and freshly cooked. It's only the British who have bad diets. :eyes:

Although seeing as I despise Sheffield United I'll spare you the chip butty song.

10. I must say this does explain a meal I had on a flight from London.
My vegetarian meal was about a half inch of butter and an inch of cheddar cheese on a roll. After that experience, I always order a vegan meal when I fly.

9. "Healthy" food may not have enough calories for them.
Sometimes so-called healthy lunches leave me feeling like I'm going to faint an hour later. How healthy is it if I'm about to keel over?

Let the kids eat their fries!

11. I have no problem with fries as long as they are served
with other, healthier food too. Fries should be part of the meal, not the entire meal.

15. I think there is a difference between a diet lunch and a healthy lunch
The 2 are often confused. The lamb and curried beef in the article aren't low calorie items. To me the ban on fries only takes away one of the worst offenders in most peoples' diet, And only takes it out of 5 meals a week.

27. One of the biggest differences being portion size
but there are lots of healthy foods that will add plenty of calories to a meal, namely whole grains.

And meat is a good thing, if you can stick with lean meat.

24. Only kidding a little bit
Poutine (pronounced, roughly, poo-teen, or poo-tin; exact Quebecer pronunciation in IPA — listen to it in .wav format) is a dish consisting of french fries topped with fresh cheese curds and covered with hot gravy (usually brown gravy) and sometimes other additional ingredients. The curds' freshness is important as it makes them soft in the warm fries, without completely melting.

Poutine is a fast food staple in eastern as well as western Canada; it is sold by nearly all fast food chains (such as New York Fries and Harvey's) in the provinces, in small diners and pubs, as well as by roadside "poutine trucks" and "fries stands". International chains like McDonalds, A&W, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King now sell mass-produced poutine across Canada. New York Fries has poutine on the menus in Canada. Popular Québec restaurants that serve poutine are Lafleur Restaurants, Chez Ashton, La Belle Province, Stratos, Fusée, Bravo and Valentine. Also, poutine is very popular in student cafeterias in high schools and universities.

Poutine is available in only a few places outside of Canada, including the northern United States and a handful of Canadian-themed restaurants and pubs throughout the rest of the world. Some popular Canadian travel destinations (such as Mexico, Florida, and Taiwan) are also known to have poutine available, but only sporadically or at the behest of Canadian expatriates.

Kids may be picky, but they'll eat anything if they go long enough without eating. God nows I did as a kid...I didn't have the luxury of being picky.

22. The English have nothing on the Scots...
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 10:38 PM by Kutjara
...who, apparently, have the unhealthiest diet in the entire galaxy. It was the Scots, after all, who invented the 'deep-fried pizza' and the 'deep-fried Mars bar.' The deep fried pizza generally consists of the cheapest store-bought frozen pizza available, fried in the same oil used to make fish and chips. If the pizza is battered first, it is known as a 'pizza crunch' (and is probably the equivalent of two years of dietary fibre for the average Scot). The pizza is usually served with a portion of chips (fries) and is best accompanied by a can of Irn Bru, an orange carbonated beverage that tastes of rust.

Deep fried Mars bars are pretty much what you'd imagine them to be. More here:

I have sampled each of these delicacies and, let me tell you, they are every bit as brain-bendingly horrible as they sound.

29. My favorite lunch in high school
- (when we didn't go to Steak and Shake for an egg sandwich - they were a dollar, then, but I don't think they have those anymore) - was a greasy, sugary, donut.

I suppose it had similar nutritional value to the the french-fry sandwich - only with more sugar.
