Cockroach stories here:
Reading through another post, I just realized we don't have that many cockroach threads. And, since I'm finished with my errands for the day, I thought I'd start one.

So here it goes...

When I used to live in asia, for the summers, we stayed in a house for 6 weeks that had cockroaches. In the country we were in, no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't really eradicate the little devils. Little? Well, that brings me to my story...

Just when I thought I'd seen everything freakish concerning cockroaches, I saw one about 5 inches long in the bathroom one night. I shrieked!! My Dad came running, shoe in hand, already knowing he'd have to play master exterminator. He quickly threw the heal of his shoe down on the little sucker...which cut it in half. OK...that is not where the story ends. Are you ready? The other half ran away!!! Eeek!! Can you top that?

1. Can't top that, however,
on my first visit to Hawaii I decided to run along the Ala Wai Canal at night. As I ran I heard and felt crunching under my feet. I assumed it to be palm fronds. When I returned to my condo, I found the soles of my runners to be caked with dead and dying cockroaches. I was later told that the roaches crawl up the canal walls onto the sidewalks after dark.

That is pretty close to topping it, alright. You know...when I really feel sad about not being able to afford moving to Hawaii I really should try to remember the roaches.

2. Paratrooper cockroaches
Yep. I moved into an elderly apartment and discovered there were not only roaches but a whole lot of them. I asked the landlord to spray and he accused me of moving them in along with my stuff. Knowing how many were there I knew full well they'd been living there a whole lot longer than I had.

I sprayed with this roach spray from the grocery store that was called "Roach Ender" or something like that. The cockroaches were coming out of that kitchen in WAVES into the rest of the apartment. Literally, there was a black tide of roaches on the floor fleeing this spray. I went into the kitchen to see where they were coming from and they were dropping off the ceiling onto me--little paratrooper cockroaches--like it was D-Day for the insect world.

I left and went to a bar for a few hours. When I got home, there were dead roaches EVERYWHERE in that apartment. I swept them all up into a pile and put them into a bag and took it to the landlord's office and dumped them on his desk. I told him it was moving day.

7. Illinois.
Yep, I'm talking about extremely prolific roaches!

Have you ever had one MOVE your foot when you tried to step on it? Yep. Been there and done that one too. Those smell really bad if you smash them.

:puke:

5. When I was 20 in 1983, my sister and I spent part of the summer
in Hawaii with my Uncle Ed (actually our great uncle---Mom's uncle). Around there, they have exotic varieties of beetles and cockroaches, not like on the mainland. (It's kinda like being in southeast Asia when it comes to insects... lol!) We were riding in his car a day or so after we arrived, and I noticed two big, weird speckled cockroaches crawling up the back window on the inside of the car. So as not to freak my sister out, I casually reached back there and killed them with a kleenex. Sis screamed when she heard the crunch, and my uncle just laughed. He said, "Yeah, we get those here all over the place. They just go where they want to----you can't exterminate them." I started laughing, but my sister was pale and shaking. She said, "Do they live in your car?" And Uncle Ed said, "No, but if we leave the windows down, they crawl in." She made absolutely sure that no car windows were EVER left down there at any time while we were there.

6. LOL
I can just picture that! My sisters were not ask kind as you...if they ever found one in the car it was fair game to put it in some poor unsuspecting person's hair! It's amazing we didn't ever kill each other on those long, overseas, trips.

8. I have cockroaches in my current house
Edited on Sun Oct-22-06 05:38 PM by mycritters2
I've never had 'em before, anywhere. The house I live in now was the church office for years, and I suspect there were roaches then, but since they came out at night when no one was there, no one knew. So, that's what they do...they come out at night and party!! In my bathroom, hallway, everywhere. The ones I find especially annoying are the ones that get into the bathtub during the night and can't get out. So, when I want to take a shower, there are all my little (some not so little) showermates. God bless 'em.

Well, I've bought spray. I'm gonna do me some evictin'. The cats will be disappointed (cockroaches make great cat toys!), but they gotta go.

9. It didn't happen to me, but grosses me out just the same
When my grandfather was a young reporter, he had the opportunity to go down to Cuba and cover all the excitement that was going on just before Castro took over the government. One night he was staying at this dinky little hotel outside of Havana and just before he was ready to go to bed he saw a roach run across the bed spread...he quickly killed it and saw another one. Well he was unsure of where they were coming from so he moved the bed away from the wall and saw hundreds of them. I guess their nest was under the bed, needless to say he didn't sleep in the bed that night and in fact spent the entire evening sitting in a chair with a phone book close by to squish any that came too close to him. :scared:

11. A cockroach actually chased me!
Years ago I worked for a movie company and we were on location in Texas. I was standing at the mirror doing my hair when I felt something by my foot. It was a 4 inch long cockroach! I grabbed my Aquanet hairspray (very sticky) and started to spray it. I backed up and it came after me...right into the spray. It backed me up to the wall so I jumped over it and it TURNED AROUND and kept coming for me! I kept spraying and finally it got too sticky to move and I threw it outside. I'm sure it wasn't dead even though it had a full can of hairspray on it! ICK!

12. This was my aunt's cockroach story
My uncle was in the State Dept or something and was stationed in Thailand. They had a good housing allowance that allowed them a live-in cook/maid and one day, my aunt walked into the kitchen just in time to see the woman pick up a (large) live cockroach off the countertop and pop it into her mouth.

It was the crunch she always remembered.... :scared:

14. In Alabama they can fly
Can you imagine my surprise when I saw one flying toward me? It landed on my chest and proceeded to crawl up my shirt. Yes, I lost my shirt right in the front yard.

16. Same here in SC.
Those 2 and 3 inch long suckers. (Origin of the Charleston...the dance...was originally the cockroach stomp)
