They'll get a bit closer, but for the life of me I can't remember the chemistry of a AA battery.
If it's one of them dry-cells then it will work until the partly-used one gives up.
If it's one of those lachlanché cells then it will give up kinda quick. You won't be able to maintain the voltage. But it will die very slowly, so you'll have a low flashlight for a while.
