Ok, post about your usual breakfast!
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 03:30 AM by Random_Australian
I had heard things about how Americans eat, so I would like to know some stuff in the one meal that ought to be more statistically invariant.

Here are the questions:

1) What do you usually have for breakfast?

2) What is it made out of? (if it was a cereal)

3) How much salt is in it? (or the amount of sodium)

Here an example - my breakfast:

1)

Cereal
Milk
A sprinkle of brown sugar.

2)Cereal's ingredients: Whole wheat (97%), raw sugar, salt, barley malt extract, minerals (zinc, gluconate, iron), vitamins (Niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, folate)

3) 200 mg.

having a banana for breakfast.

I'm pretending I didn't see the other things. ;)

:)

Oh, and thanks! :hug::hi:

7. Just coffee the first 6-8 hours of the day, usually.
Then a big meal right before bed.

Completely back-assward and unhealty, no frickin doubt.

Caffeine is an appetite suppressant, y'know.
Starting the day with a full pot of really strong coffee
keeps my appetite pretty suppressed.

5. My breakfast consists of whatever I have in the house.
Usually cheerios and a cup of coffee, sometimes granola bars, sometimes oatmeal, sometimes eggs if I'm not lazy.

What I also do sometimes is combine raw oatmeal with yogurt and add cut up canatoloupe or melon or berries. Breakfast of champions that.

Today, I got up late and had to run to school...so I had nothing but an sweetened ice tea (the proper Canadian way...not the actual Iced Tea Americans drink..blah)and a cup of coffe, followed by an early lunch of pizza. Heallllthhhy.

30. My first guess
would be work....getting up earlier, to go to work, and most people bypass their breakfast, to get more sleep, or they just take coffee/cig, in its place...I use to have jobs that started at 5am, and breakfast was the last thing on my mind...squeezing another 5 minutes of sleep, was my main priority...I think, that might play a part in it.

93. I don't think work conditions
are decreasing, but I do believe, a lot more people are working longer hours, or taking up a second job to make ends met...my wife for example....she wakes up at 5am usually, gets to work at 6:30 am...she doesnt' get off until 5:30 pm, her drive usually takes 45 minutes...so, she is on the road/working over 12 hours a day...I do believe, working like this throws, a decision onto that person...either sleep in more, or wake up to have a sensible breakfast/wake up time...my wife chooses, to have the extra amount of sleep...

79. May I politely disagree?
Dunkin Donuts drive thrus are way too crowded for the majority of people to not be eating breakfast. They may not eat it at home at the kitchen table, but I think most people are eating "breakfast" (if one considers breakfast the first meal in the morning). I also see a large number of people in my office cafeteria chowing on bagels and donuts. (I'm not saying we eat healthy breakfasts... :) )

91. Yes, I can see that
but I hardly ever do see that to be honest...I know of people who do it, hence my 95% percent...but most of my buds are smokers, so they wake up, cig/coffee...does that make a breakfast? If so, then most of the people I know, do have breakfast...

I usually see my friends, my wife, my inlaws wake up...coffee, head for the door...I do admit that they do eat later on in the morning sometimes, but does that make a breakfast? If you wake up at 5am, have a cig/coffee...and then at 10am, have a bagel, is that considered breakfast? I really dont' see it as breakfast....I guess my view of it was narrow in that regard, if people see that as being a breakfast, 5hours after you arrive to work.

It might depend on where "one" is working...most of my jobs have been in high demand of physical labor...and hardly any of us ate breakfast, we would show up with coffee/cig, and get to work, but we all did have big lunches ...maybe with less physically demanding jobs, people eat more...also, with a good number of my jobs, food wasn't around, not even machines...you mention a cafeteria at your work, how many other work area's have that?

I have had a lot of food services jobs, and I would eat at work, but again, its the same thing I posted above...if I wake up at 4:30am, to get to work at 5am...but dont' eat until 10am...is that breakfast? This is an interesting topic actually, I bet there is a lot more to it....

95. Yeah, I guess that's where the discrepancy comes in
I wake up at 5 am, go to the gym, drive an hour to work and eat what I consider breakfast around 8 am. Hmmm. Basically, I consider breakfast the first meal before noon I guess.

As far as how many other work areas have cafeterias, it's pretty common in companies now. (There are 6000 employees on my "campus" so we have two cafeterias.)

Oh and for the record, no, coffee and cigarettes do not a breakfast make. LOL. :P

96. damn, and the whole time
I thought cigs/coffee were healthy for me... I kid, I kid...:) 6000 employee's on your campus....damn, must be a big company you work for, or you work at a university of some sort...my wife's work campus is rather large too, around 15,000 I believe...:)

For me breakfast, is probably anything eaten within the first hour of waking...and if its small, like a bagel, or an apple...I don't consider that a meal either, thats more snacking than anything...the first thing I imagine when I hear "breakfast" is eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, waffles, and a big glass of oj/milk....:)

8. I sleep days so I don't have "breakfast" per se
I get up in the afternoon/evening so what I eat for my first meal is widely varied. It might be "breakfast" food or it might be lunch/dinner food. There's never any predictability (foodwise) with my lifestyle.

I think we're overworked and overstressed.

I just recently started forcing myself to eat a little breakfast every morning and it's been great for my stress levels, metabolism, etc.

I never used to do it because I had a 40-minute commute to work, 10 hours there and another 40-minutes home. I never had the time -- so I started making the time.

1) A mug of 1/2 coffee and 1/2 milk 1 (x2)
A mini bagel or whole grain toast with a little butter, or cereal with 1% milk

2) Cereal ingredients: Whole hard red winter wheat, long grain brown rice, oats, triticale, barley, rye, buckwheat, sesame seeds, evaporated cane juice crystals, soy protein concentrate, brown rice syrup, chicory root fiber, almonds, whole oats, whole flaxseed, expeller pressed canola oil, honey, salt, natural flavor, mixed tocopherols (natural vitamin E) for freshness. I sometimes buy granola type cereal like this to mix with puffed wheat or another not-so-flavorful cereal. This is a bit too sweet by itself.

Way back when I was in school I would have a glass of milk instead of tea. Can barely look at food first thing in the AM. If I want to take a lunch to work I need to fix it the night before.
I usually have lunch, dinner and a late snack so I do get three meals.

sometimes I have a bowl of Raisin Bran and later a banana at work. Today's breakfast. Sometimes yogurt (again with banana chaser). Usually two days a week I make an egg with cheese on an English muffin or have a poached egg. Sometimes french toast or pancakes or waffles. I eat breakfast EVERY day. I would sputter to a stop in no time without it. I also like to have melon, or strawberries on top of cream cheese on a English muffin. I love breakfast.

Ohh yeah--that's an actual picture of my breakfast, btw, from some time ago. Bacon, eggs, kippers (or sardines), beer, and coffee. Mmm--no better way to start off a weekend day! Amount of sodium: UNKNOWN. But keep in mind that I only eat this a few times a month; it's mine and my girlfriend's 'lazy morning' breakfast. Usually I eat a yogurt or oatmeal and a banana.

Now I'm hungry for bacon.

72. Mine is usually
Low-sodium organic tomato juice (a juice glass full---about 6 to 8 oz.). Has about 400 mg sodium in it. Two organic eggs, scrambled, with reduced-fat cheddar cheese crumbled in it. Because this is a high-protein breakfast, I don't usually eat anything else until lunchtime. I used to eat cereal for breakfast for years, but I always found myself snacking before lunch.

73. Like most here...

I have no interest in food until after I have been awake for an hour or two. Or three, depending. But then I get really hungry.

Lately breakfast has been very un-breakfasty food:

One or two slices of Ezekiel Sprouted 7-Grain Bread, lightly toasted:

Ingredients: (all certified organic grains) sprouted wheat, filtered water, malted barley, sprouted rye, sprouted barley, sprouted oats, sprouted millet, sprouted corn, sprouted brown rice, fresh yeast, sea salt. (no preservatives, must be kept refrigerated or frozen)

Per slice:

Calories: 80
Calories from fat: 5 (unsaturated)
Sodium: 80 mg
Fiber: 3g
Protein: 4g

Topped with Super Garlic Hummus:

Ingredients: (made fresh at the deli and all organic) garbanzo beans, tahini, lemon juice, parsley, tamari, cumin, paprika, salt & pepper.

It doesn't have the nutritional breakdown.

Chased with water or sometimes Bolthouse Farms Tomato Juice (awesome stuff and much more healthy than the brands that sit on the shelves. But rather expensive, so it's not every day):

http://www.bolthouse.com

And sometimes an energy drink or coffee, depending on how well I slept the night before.

I do (usually) have several (3-4) smaller healthy meals/snacks throughout the day, though.

Usually either with cream and sugar, or I'll get the bottled Starbucks Frappacino thing once in awhile.

Very rarely I'll eat breakfast, and that's usually when I'm going out with people. I get an omelet with various and sundry things inside. Or just scrambled eggs 'n' bacon with potatoes. I don't put much salt on any of that, but who knows how much was put there by the cook.

When I make it myself I put some spices in it, but not too much salt.

88. I'm not normal
as I usually just eat leftovers because of my job (I'm a barista at Starbucks and open the store at 4am.), get something out of the display case, or have dinner-type food.

I'll answer for what I eat when I eat real breakfast, on a day off or whatnot:

1.) I usually have 11-grain toast with butter and raspberry jam, soysage, home fries, and tofu scramble.

2.) Toast: Organic whole wheat flour, water, brown flax seeds, gluten flour, oat flakes, soy grits, yellow flax seeds, millet seeds, yeast, vinegar (apple cider), sea salt, organic whole rye flour, barley, brown rice, millet flour, semolina, bacterial culture. Loaf is topped with whole spelt.

Soysage: Soy, spices, natural flavorings(vegan), soya oil.

Jam(homemade): Raspberries, pectin, grape juice.

Butter: Heavy cream.

Home fries: potatoes, salt, spices, black pepper

Tofu scramble: Tofu, salt, black pepper, turmeric, red pepper, whatever raw veggies I have on hand, other spices.

3.) More than I want to think about. Toast: 160mg. Soysage: 330mg. Home fries: 1/8 tsp. Tofu: 1/8tsp. (The last two are give-or-take) Total: around 1776mg. (29.6% of DRV)

89. Eggs
I rarely eat lunch - or if I do, it's usually just fruit - so I make sure I have a good breakfast.

Before breakfast, I take this every day: http://www.genuinehealth.com/english/pbn/index.php?id=39§ion=165 in a bit of freshly squeezed orange juice and water.

Breakfast usually consists of eggs (2 eggs, sometimes whites only, sometimes 1 yolk) - either a sort of frittata with onions, mushrooms and veggies (either broccoli or spinach) and cheese, or lately, a wrap consisting of scrambled eggs, red & green peppers, onions, and either a bit of cheese, or some turkey sausage, topped with salsa, on a brown rice tortilla.

If I'm in a big rush, I'll most likely have some Nature's Path Hemp Granola cereal, and some plain yoghurt with fresh or frozen fruit added. :hi:

98. The coffee is the only important bit...but this is the norm.
1) What do you usually have for breakfast?

A bowl of muesli with milk (organic whole milk),
Black coffee very strong.

2) What is it made out of? (if it was a cereal)

All sorts of stuff, I get the "no added sugar" version...there's these little wheat(?) flakes, oats, raisins, bits of nut...I'm not entirely sure, but I've checked and there's nothing dodgy in there.

3) How much salt is in it? (or the amount of sodium)

I couldn't tell you without walking off to find the information - but it's about the lowest of the cereals...some of them are utterly unbelievable - seriously :scared: (family history of, probably sodium caused, heart thingies...it's the only bit of "healthy eating" I pay attention to).

The good news is that for hypertension you need long term exposure..... however, for your heart thing I have no idea what effect it would have.
