Goddamned baseball. NO HOUSE TONIGHT!
FUCK YOU, BASEBALL!!

TV Stations should allow the option of watching something that we expect to be on at a particular time, or watching whatever bullshit special they are running, whether it be a sports game I couldn't give a shit about, a lame movie, or another asinine "All-Star Review" about no-talent celebrity shitbags.

18. Damn right. The asses already take 15 minutes of all news programs,
and 1/3 of all newspapers (except the few legitimate ones, like NYT, etc.), and keep America ignorant of everything that fucking matters and has any value in favor of worshiping the MVP of the day and spewing quarts of semen over the newest touchdown (but not in a gay way, of course).

We already have fucking 18 sports channels, if not more - why does sports need to occlude the other channels? Fuck that.

20. Do you mean to imply that the other sections of newspapers
actually have news? We seem to find pages of obits, birth announcements, legal notices, car ads, "celebrity" BS (how awful the paparazzi are and other shite), stupid RW (oxymoron?) letters, photos of children and pets, (the mandatory summer photos of young inner city kids near a gushing fire hydrant), misleading headlines and story titles, religious "news" and attestations to personal piety and the success of food-based outreach programs, wedding announcements, Golden wedding announcements, Diamond wedding announcements, lead "news" stories about what to do about sexual predators, homeless shelters and unpainted houses on Third Avenue, long gushy articles about Welcome Home Heroes!! with numerous pics of returned troops (back home for maybe one week before Shrub sends them back) in the high school gymn with cops and cheerleaders giving them high-fives, and op ed articles by krauthammermalkincoulterbuchananbroder...NEWS!!! Did you say NEWS!!???

27. Quad-City Times, Des Moines Register (Gannett paper)
& some more local ones. Ones from other states don't seem a whole lot better. Perhaps my perspective is a bit cynical.

28. There's your answer
You're reading a Gannett paper and a Lee paper. The two worst (and biggest) chains in the business.

Friend of mine left the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (another Lee paper) for a job in Kansas about a year ago. I never saw anybody so happy to leave a newsroom in my life.

29. I think the Lee papers might be the worst.
I also have problems with our local family owned paper which is about half high school sports and the rest wedding announcements etc. and pages of legals and ads all over. One page each week announces: Attend the Church of Your Choice and lists them all, every Friday issue. One page is a court docket mostly of people who have kited checks in local grocery stores (poor single moms usually)and DUI offenders. One whole page is the editor and his family's personal opinionizing. News items are usually of school events showing kids at Sacred Heart on a field trip or kids entertaining bewildered old folks at one of the nursing homes. (They run this story every four months it seems). Then the award pictures. Someone is handing some piece of paper to someone else for raising the most money during a charity golf meet or magazine sales drive. One or two of those per issue. Then when there is news it is usually a few paragraphs of something sprung on us by the city council or hospital board after some secretive sessions and with no follow-up at all. A few letters to the editor appear once a week (it's a biweekly) and they tend to be Thank You letters for helping with the Ham Supper or something or else insane letters about how many babies the liberals have killed through abortions. The guy who faithfully covered high school sports for years could never afford a car because of the teeny salary he had and a retiring basketball coach was nice enough to buy him a car!! I suppose the paper is interesting from an anthropological viewpoint but the current editor who inherited his job is intellectually incurious and encourages this among the staff and is just coasting along. He is personally genial but seems not to want any kind of reporting that might get under the surface of events. We quit subscribing to it since most of it is irrelevant to us and it was getting to be a lot like paying for cable and getting mostly ads.

30. It's a toss-up between Lee and Gannett
Both treat their employees horribly and both put profits far above journalism. (If you want an eye-opener on this, read "Knightfall" by Davis Merritt, a long-time upper-echelon editor with Knight-Ridder, going back to the days when Knight and Ridder were separate chains. When they merged, Ridder got control and screwed the pooch.)

I don't know what to tell you about your local paper except it isn't much different from others that size. Small dailies (I used to work for one) and semis/weeklies have a hell of a time getting or keeping editorial staff that's even halfway decent because they pay so little. They also never have enough staff to cover even a small town's news, so they fill the space between ads with the check-passing photos and other fluff you mentioned.

The church service announcements are ads, though. Each church listed paid for that space.

I wish the games were on a different channel, so I could flip back and forth. I don't want to wait until November, for the awesome-ness of my Fox shows to return.

31. Hey, at least you get to watch House!
Due to the fact I have Res hall government meetings on tuesday nights at 8, coupled with the fact that my Trends in Media Technolgy class runs to 8:30 means that I Don't get to watch House :(

Would anybody be willing to buy an impoverished College Student Tivo for a year?
