I think we DUers need to start our own country somewhere

Or even our own state right here in America. Maybe we could all chip in and buy a chunk of some sparsely populated big-ass state. And let's make damned good and sure we have immigration laws that prevent anyone from moving to our state if their political and/or views are to the right of, say, Ed Asner.

So, who's with me on this?

1. Where would this new country be though?
I like the idea, but the thing is, our likes for the places we live are so different. I love the Pacific Northwest, but it is certainly an aquired taste.
But I am up for something, as long as we can all agree on the immigration rules and our own laws.

3. Several months ago, in the Meeting Room
Somebody had found a whole town in New Mexico that was for sale. It had been a resort or something, and the owners had declared bankruptcy. It had services and roads, was less than a hundred miles from a small city (Las Cruces). Don't know whatever happened -- might have been a bit of skylarking, but it sounded good to me. I love New Mexico, and hope to live there (again) one day. It's not perfect, but it beats the hell out of the north central/midwest for weather any day, and people do tend to mind their own business out there.

It's probably in the archives -- it was last summer some time.

17. For Sale
Edited on Thu Dec-25-03 12:55 AM by ldoolin
Cisco, Utah is for sale. Probably dirt cheap. Nobody lives there anymore (except the occasional hobo passing through), just a bunch of abandoned houses. It's 45 minutes from Moab, which is fairly liberal as Utah towns go, 45 minutes from the Colorado state line, and on the old Denver & Rio Grand railroad line.

If ya move there, treat that little town with the reverence it deserves. The final crash scene from Vanishing Point was filmed there. Greatest movie ever made.

NE Minnesota is VERY left-wing, and I'm sure a landowner could find us some land near the Iron Range. Beautiful place up there, too.

especially the North Shore, between Duluth and Grand Portage. It'd also be cool to take over St. Louis County and live there.

11. I personally like someplace more inland...
...but the land bordering the North Shore, so that folks who want to be there can live there.

I love the inland areas near and inside the Iron Range, myself.

7. i kinda liked the cascadia idea
pretty mild summers and winters on the coast, good skiing usually just an hour or two drive away. Windy and Seattle has alot of rain but besides that, I've always like the Pacific Northwest.

8. We already have our own country.
Edited on Wed Dec-24-03 11:38 PM by Ready4Change
It's called the United States of America.

The fact that the current batch of "leaders" seem to be doing their best to

-destroy our governments finances with debt

- destroy our reputation abroad

- devastate our environment for tens of generations to come

- send a quarter million of our youth to a distant country where hundreds of them are dying and killing thousands of others

- squander the remaining precious petrochemical resources of the world

And all for a couple decades of decadent living for a very small percentage of our population (themselves) doesn't mean we can't kick them out and set things right again.

Unless you've given up. Have you?

12. Isn't some right wing group trying this?
I thought I read somewhere about a group of right wingers who were going to all move to a some state (Wisconsin? South Dakota?) and use the influx to take control of the local governments, then the state gov't, and of course representatives to congress, and make their own little right-wing paradise within the US.

Kind of like Utah, in a way...

So, no need to secede, although I read someplace around here that the Arizona state constitution reserves the right to secede if the US Gov't implements martial law, so maybe that's a good place to start.

That's the 'Free State Project', which is mostly a bunch of Libertarians.

I think they picked New Hampshire, or something in the vicinity.

14. If there was a country just for DU'ers?
There'd be a civil war in it, a couple months at most after it's founding.

Just look at GD and GD Primaries. :scared:

19. Ecotopia?
See the 1975 novel Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach. Washington, Oregon, and Northern California.

Personally my opinion is that the place Callenbach picked might have worked in 1975 but wouldn't work today. That region is liberal but now pretty much runs on a Microsoft-Silicon Valley axis with too many business ties to the rest of the country, and any secession movement there would be dead on arrival.

I'm actually thinking that the two most likely places would be (1) Hawaii, or (2) Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Alaska's also a possibility but it's too dominated by conservatives right now, and the secessionist party there, the Alaska Independence Party, is certifiable right-wing yahoo. In New Hampshire we'd be competing with the Free State Project, a bunch of libertarians trying the same thing right now.
