3. Heya!
She does, but pics don't do it justice. There were some higher elevations with rich colors, and my Dad didn't stop at each overlook, lol. We were there at the peak time for the colors as we got closer to the Great Smokies. :-)

Good to be back and seeing you!

Wouldn't want to go back at this point, but a great place for a kid. Plus it has the Beacon.

10. We actually lived outside Spartanburg
in Gaffney, home of the peachoid.

I loved the country and the region, but didn't like the people much.

Thinking they are the NYC of the upstate. Bastards, all of them.

28. We didn't quite go down that far
Although my parents live near SC, and on our last visit, we went to Cheraw, the birthplace of Dizzy Gillespie.

It's like a cradle of jazz. We drove through Hamlet NC this visit, the birthplace of John Coltrane, which isn't far from Cheraw.

One of my best friends from way back was from Spartanburg, incidentally. :-)

8. I saw Asheville and Lake Lure for the first time
All of my previous ventures into western Carolina were further north, on I-40 and the Blue Ridge Skyway, which the latter we did hit the day of these pics. We did a lot of back roads travel, which is where you see the real sights. :hi:

13. Hell yes
My nephew, who is now 5, couldn't leave me alone, lol! He is in the advanced reading group at his Kindergarten, and he read to me as much as I read to him. I went with my sister to pick him up at school each day, and he ignored her and went right for Uncle Laurin! :D We played chess (he made sure to teach me all of the different moves of each piece), played frisbee, shared an after-school snack of mini-moonpies and milk, and enjoyed the balsa wood airplane I bought him at Cracker Barrel, lol. The kid is a riot! Was sure tough saying goodbyes...

 :hi:

23. We flew first class
Which made things SO MUCH better. On our way there, we had Vanna White sitting in the opposite aisle, one row in front of us. She was very nice (I am not a fan of her show, but it's hard to ignore a pop culture icon), no make-up, wearing a light blue warm-up suit, and no airs about her at all. We saw on the local news later in the week she was in Columbia, SC, for a charity event. I made her laugh with some cheesy joke regarding buying vowels and whatnot... she was very gracious in doing so, lol. This was as we were disembarking, and she was 'outed' by her seatmate, lol.

Flight back was a little bumpy, but nothing a few Jack 'n Cokes can't fix, lol. No celebrities on that one. ;-)

24. Well that's a cool story too....
...I can't stand Wheel o'Fortune which I call Wheel for 'tards :o....ahh yes indeed...if I were to get on a plane..it'd HAVE to be first class...some champagne would be in order to wash down the valium..and a nicotine patch on each jugular vein...then MAYBE I'd consider flyin'!!

i've not been to north carolina for a long time now. it's not nearly as convenient as when we lived in virginia - insofar as any trip on 95 can be convenient...

31. Well...
My sister (smartly) doesn't let him drink sodas, and they were minis, which have fewer calories and such. :D

But having spent my own childhood in Chattanooga TN, the birthplace of Moon Pies, I can say that the RC/Moon Pie directive can only be violated when not in TN. So we got away with the little-known Carolina Loophole. :P :hi: Shugah!

29. nothing could be finer
than to have your ham and eggs in Carolina.

We need a challenge here for people from Maine and Wisconsin to post pictures, although it may be a little late for those northerners. My maple is still green.

33. I would like to see a Vermont autumn one day
They seem to be among the most beautiful, by reputation. But the ones in Appalachia are quite striking. Washington state has decent falls too, when the colored maples contrast with the evergreen firs and snow-capped peaks.
