Carlos Delgado.

OK, I'm a Mets fan and like all Mets fans, I'm thrilled with Carlos Delgado's playing in the post season. The man is doing a classic "Mr. October."

But let's not forget that Carlos Delgado originally refused to become a Met. Why? Because when recruiting him as a free agent, the Mets sent an executive to speak to him. Trying to curry favor the executive deigned to speak to Delgado in "street" Spanish, which Delgado - who is as proud of his intellect as his atheletic abilities found condescending.

Carlos Delgado has long been an activist against the US Navy's indiscrimate use of the Puerto Rican island of Vieques as a bombing range. More recently he refused to stand for the singing of "God Bless America" to protest the Iraq war. (As part of the contract with the Mets he agreed to stand - but his point was made.)

His teammates, all of whom are fond of him and respect him, report that his favorite topic of conversation is politics and he's not talking about tax cuts for people as rich as he is.

Delgado has said that his baseball idol is Roberto Clemente, also an activist, who was killed in an air crash bringing supplies to earthquake ravaged Nicaurgua.

I know some people don't like the Mets like I do, but there could be no finer person to rise to prominence in national sports than our first baseman.

I hate to remind you of this, but the last time you guys won a series and the President called, Sparky Anderson obliged Reagan by giving him effusive praise and saying something along the lines of, "Now all that we need is for you to win."

It pissed me off.

It sucked. It made me wish that San Diego had kicked the Tigers ass.

It wasn't quite as bad as what FOX did after the Red Sox won the series, cutting to the "international" coalition fighting in "Operation Iraqi Freedom" (or what ever they were calling the war for Halliburton at that time - they have so many slogans) but somehow Anderson's Reagan praise stuck in my mind for the last 22 years.

Anyway, good luck. I'm sure we'll meet. It seems that El Duque will be back too.

Of course, I wouldn't object if Delgado uses the same spotlight to trash the war, but FOX will probably cut the feed.

When he walked in the winning run in Game 6 of the NLCS, that was one of my worst moments as a Mets fan.

10. Yeah that was one of my worst days ever!

I still can remember it so vividly. I went upstairs to my room because the game was so tense and I needed to concentrate in private. I started off sitting on the edge of my bed and by the time they brought Rogers into the game (I knew we were going to lose) I was on my knees in front of the tv. When he walked in that run, I guess I lost control of my emotions and sobbed for a good 20 minutes. That was one of the most exciting post season series I ever watched...and the excitement from the grand slam single to the crushing defeat of that walk was just too much to handle. Although I still blame Benitez and John Franco for blowing that game

that if he liked playing video games or collecting baseball cards they would mention that. Fox's little "tidbits" about the players they flash up with their stats really annoys me. I don't know why but them telling me Scott Spezio is in a garage band or Paul Lo Duca owns dogs irks me...I guess it's because they are unable to say anything relevant about baseball. I still think that baseball should let the team's local station broadcast the playoff games in their home market. While I'm fairly certain that Keith Hernandez is hitting the sauce during the game his commentary along with Ron Darling's and Gary Cohen's is not only informative (about BASEBALL!) it is also entertaining...Faux could learn a few things from them

Some guys are really good at getting hit when their club needs a baserunner. Ron Hunt led the league in getting hit from 1968-74, including 50 times in '71, the all-time single-season record. Craig Biggio has been hit 282 times, the all-time record.

"Arsenal" is kind of a strange word to use for that, though. I might've said it's one of his tools.

I just checked. Eckstein led the AL in getting hit in 2001 (21) and 2002 (27).

I've hated the dirt cam since they started it — and it wasn't Faux that started it. (I forget who it was, but it wasn't them.) It adds nothing, and I wonder how it can get a picture and still be guaranteed not to interfere with a batted ball. It's gotta be stickin' out a little, wouldn't you think?

Somebody made a real nice catch in left field a couple nights ago, and they showed replays from five different angles. Heebus, the JFK assassination got less scrutiny!

But the one that really pisses me off is the blimp cam. I haven't seen that during the post-season yet, so maybe they can do it only in certain cities or something — like LA; they do it every time they show a Dodgers game at home. I've got to wonder what freaking idiot came up with it, since I've never heard a baseball fan say, "Gee, I wish I had one of those really neat seats directly over the stadium, about 500 feet up."

His playing - which has been outstanding - will be a big topic of conversation outside the borders of Fox if the Mets go all the way. If the Mets lose - and with their ripped up pitching they could - Carlos may get less attention.

He'll be the toast of an important media city if the Mets win. This man is very articulate, very bright, and very opinionated in a way we all appreciate.

No disrepect to the Cardinals or the Tigers, but there is a definite win for the political left in the Mets winning.

My point was that it's only through the Faux broadcasts that his opinions will be delivered to the masses. I can't see him being featured in anything larger than Sports Illustrated, which for all its circulation still caters to a niche audience.

Although I suppose "60 Minutes" might do a piece on him. What the hell, they've done Tiger Woods 56 times. :eyes:
