Today's my birthday.
I'm 55. How odd it feels, not because I realize that's kinda OLD (it is!), but because this year, age doesn't matter. Worrying about a number seems so trivial. That's good, really. Maybe I'm less shallow than I was when 40 knocked me over for a day. I've taken the day off work so I can enjoy my birthday, but my sweetie's at work, it's cold and rainy outside, and I'm watching political talking heads on tv. Well, and hanging out in DU. Feeling kind of depressed.

I've paid so much attention to the suffering in the world and the politics of it that I'm having a hard time remembering how to not pay attention so I can enjoy this one day.

Any words of wisdom? Other birthdays out there today? How's this year's birthday for you?

Kinda? It IS old!..LOL, I am kidding..

Happy Birthday to you! I hope it is a great day for ya, and 55 isn't old at all. Hell, I'm ... well..ok, I'm only 42, but still..LOL

I'm just messin' with ya. Have fun today and be good!

2. Happy Birthday!
It is ultimately just a birthday like any other since 55 doesn't add to you to the "legal to drink," "AARP membership candidate," or "Medicare recipient" clubs. This year I hit a "big" birthday yet to me it was no different than any other. I got over the 'big' birthday thing when I turned 30, LOL.

I do try to take a break from the problems of the world and any personal or family issues for the day. Heck, there are 364 other days to focus on that! Turn off the T.V. and stay out of any place on DU other than the lounge until tomorrow. Read or do whatever other indoor recreation suits your fancy.

Love your name! Your name just gave me my second laugh of the day. Thanks for that, and the advice. Turning off the tv and staying out of everywhere on DU except the lounge makes good sense. I'll consider it. :pals:

4. Mine too!
Happy BDay, rhiannon!

I know how you feel. I was going to take the day off, but I knew that I'd just sit around and watch the news feeling helpless, depressed and useless because I can't do anything to change the state of the world.
So, I'm at work trying to keep busy and looking forward to dinner and poker with my friends.

I'm 31 today and I feel super old! I have not accomplished any of the goals (yet) that I've set for myself and another year has passed to remind me of that fact. But all in all, I think this year is going to be great!

Libras rule! We can take what the world throws at us and throw it right back!

You are so smart to have gone to work today. I think I just set myself up for some birthday blues, staying home by myself on a rainy Monday.

Thanks for being here. Friends rock--even virtual ones! :yourock:

13. Happy Birthday to you!!
 :hi:

I had a similar birthday this year. Want to hear about it? I got the brilliant idea, since it was on a weekday, to just take the day off....and (get this) go to the Dentist, then immediately drive an hour to see a sick friend, and then go to an attorney and draw up my will. By the end of the day, I was exhausted and depressed. I remember, even though my husband took me out to dinner, I felt sad and alone at the end of the day. Some things happened, while I was running all over town, that I won't get into.

I guess I told you this story so you'll know you are not alone. It's hard, when it's supposed to be a special day, to feel sad...but, I bet, a lot of people do, on various birthdays of their lives.

Next year, you and I will have to make a promise to ourselves: we'll have to do something fun (and only fun)...how's that?

As far as too much news? Well, just hang out here in the lounge a bit.

 :grouphug:

It HAS been quite a half century, hasn't it? Maybe we'll be around for another 50 years or so. That way we'll have time to finish growing up;)

43. Hi proud
Thanks. Yeah, it's strange celebrating anything, with the world on fire. But, I guess when the world's on fire, we have to find pleasure in and treasure the small moments. All these lovely birthday posts have brought me much pleasure. I've also had a visit from my daughter and grandbabies, had phone calls from my other daughters and grandbabies (who live out of state), gone out with my sweetie and enjoyed Indian food and attended a lecture on campus by Richard Dawkins--and watched the Daily Show. And the night's not quite over yet.

All in all, a good day. Good vibes all around! :grouphug:
