It's a bit of Irish immigrant vernacular called a "paddyism" that roughly means "by god." If you need to know more, chase down a linguist or someone who has expertise in recent Irish history.

They didn't know exactly what it meant.

7. Beg Ara ...
Is the name of a legendary island off the west coast of Ireland that is only visible every seven years. I've HEARD that begorrah comes from that...maybe it was such an astounding sight that people would should "Beg Ara!"when they saw it. Maybe so...or maybe it's a vaudeville/tin pan alley stage-Irish expression that you'll never hear in Ireland.

Who knows?:)

Right up there with "bedad" and "bejeepers". Strongly akin to "dagnabit" and goshdarn" (or my brother's favorite "cheese and rice!") as sounding like profane speech without actually BEING profane.
