What the HELL is Chevy thinking?
This is a real ad, folks. :grr:
It's nearly as stupid as that "Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet" ad series from about 30 years ago.

2. I think it's perfect.
It's targeted to a subset of the population....southern Nascar fan types. I think it's a great commercial for what it's meant to do. -- obviously not meant to appeal to everyone.

11. I've seen the ad on TV
The Colbert stuff isn't part of the original ad. I don't get the joke about telling him not to steal it.

23. In my opinion, they are trying to bring it to his attention so it gets
aired and commened upon.

4. Desperation
Having eschewed fuel efficiency and high quality for years now, the American car companies are getting their ass handed to them on a platter by the Japanese and Europeans. So they fall back on that age old advertising pitch: patriotism. A wise man once said it was the last refuge of a scoundrel.

14. To be fair, one of the problems is that asian markets
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 12:34 PM by Bassic
are all but closed to american and european auto-makers. So it's not that surprising that the asian companies are doing better. This being said, I do agree and GM and Ford are having a lot of trouble hopping on the quality and fuel effeciency bandwagon after waiting so long.

6. What's John Mellencamp thinking, for that matter
They've actually brought back the baseball, hot dogs, etc. commercials, by the way, or rather made new ones.

7. Works for me
The song says "our," and the video has a lotta liberals.

What's the problem?

And I liked "Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet." I liked it a lot.

15. I kind of like it. While I would prefer that Mellencamp be made illegal
and put into a prison of the banal for eternity, I don't find the commercial offensive or wrong.

Insipid, empty, sophomoric, lackluster, uncreative, and uncompelling, yes - esp. with that music - but not wrong.

That none of this would have happened if that uppity Rosa Parks would have just gone out and bought a Chevrolet?

22. Slate thought the same thing
http://www.slate.com/id/2151143/?nav=tap3

This ad makes me—and, judging by my e-mail, some of you—very angry. It's not OK to use images of Rosa Parks, MLK, the Vietnam War, the Katrina disaster, and 9/11 to sell pickup trucks. It's wrong. These images demand a little reverence and quiet contemplation. They are not meant to be backed with a crappy music track and then mushed together in a glib swirl of emotion tied to a product launch. Please, Chevy, have a modicum of shame next time.
